Default Rebuild question

My car has 78,xxx miles on it and me and my dad were talking today about benefits of doing different things in the next year or two. We were thinking about getting the engine rebuilt with trick flows 2v heads and comp camshafts. I know the price for the heads and cams but does anyone whos had their engine rebuilt know the price it cost them for labor and all that? Also if you rebuild a engine does it essientially have 0 miles on it or is it still have a chance of little things going out or the whole thing taking a **** like a high mile engine does? Just trying to get an idea of the total price because I can save up now and my parents would pay a decent chunk of the cost as a "early" graduation present. On another random note how many miles can our engines get up to before going out if taken care of pretty well with regular oil changes and stuff like that?

No need to rebuild a motor that is in perfect running condition, unless you need to build the motor for more boost, nitrous, compression.

These mod motors will get well over 150k miles on them before I would even start to worry about a rebuild, even then there are guys who have perfectly running cars. You can however add those heads/cams to your stock motor and make a ton more power. Your gonna need long tube headers though.

I would wait, considering your mileage and the fact that a rebuild is only needed when pushing 200k, or if the rings/bearings go, which ever comes first.

Thats good to know. Are the trick flow heads and comp cams a good combo? And I would get headers also as spike said. With the rebuild being able to wait I could also spend the money on an intake manifold. How much hp could I see from a combo like that?

I would guess 340rwhp, but it all depends on what combo you go with.

Those heads, cams, intake, plenum, throttle body made slightly over 407HP & 347TQ at the flywheel on engine dyno. There was some other variable as well to get those numbers, but given that it's still @ 340HP & 294TQ to the rear wheels once tuned. I don't feel like taking the time to find the original thread that that info is from, but you can if you'd like. It was from the Modular depot forums.

look at the top of the sheet for the part numbers used.

Unless you are trying to make a wild N/A combo I would not waste money on an aftermarket intake manifold. None of them make the power to justify the cost of them.

Comp Cams has a great rep and I'm sure once they get their hands on a set of TFS 2v heads they will have some really nice cams for it. Or can tell you what cams work best with those heads. You will need long tubes to flow the extra air of the cams/heads if you do it for sure. Or you will be leaving ALOT of power on the table.

Ok another question I had was does sending my heads off to be ported do the same thing as buying brand new heads because it would save me a few hundred bucks going that route

They won't flow as good as the new TFS heads, but ported heads and good sized cams can still make good power. But the TFS heads are gonna be a solid 30hp more over ported stockers.

TFS heads on a 2v with appropriate cams is going to be similar to a 4v swap as a power upgrade. The stock bottom end is fine if you're not using a power adder.

Another question I had was with the cams. Would I need to buy the roller rockers and valve springs also to get the most out of them or are they for more extreme hp set-ups?

Our cars don't have roller rockers, we have cam followers as the cam rides on them. with anything over the comp 262ah cams you will need stiffer valve springs. Its all listed right on there site what your car will require with those cams. Your also going to need a higher stall torque converter as well.
