5.4 swap

Ok guys heres the deal. bought a procharger for my mach 1. decided i should get a forged short block since its my dd and i want to keep it around a while. started lookin at a 5.0 stroker then i saw the 5.4.

so no my question is how much more work is the 5.4 swap verses the 5.0? i can get the 5.4 4v block for about 2600 or i can get the 5.0 for about 3200. so can someone please enlighten me. http://www.mach1registry.org/forums/.../worshippy.gif

i know you all are gonna tell me that i should do a search. i have for about the past 8 hours. i have been on every mustang forum i can find and i still can find anything. http://www.mach1registry.org/forums/...milies/cya.gif

thanks for your help you guys

Well with the 5.0, everything will bolt back up same as the 4.6.

The 5.4 is taller and wider by about an inch or so. The main issues are exhaust and intake. You'll have to either pick up a 5.4 specific intake, or adapters. The stock exhaust manifolds will work and afew shorty headers, but you'll have to "adjust" the mid-pipe. There's longtubes, hopefully, in the works. You'll probably have to drill some more holes in the procharger bracket too.

I wouldn't consider it a huge deal Your hood clearance may be an issue though and you may have to switch to something like a cobra R hood (I know mach owners loathe that but it's worth it). Apart from choosing adapter plates or complete intake, and stock exhaust vs. shorty vs. longtube the challenge will be minimal. You will need to modify the bracket for the blower but at worst case you can have one machined for a reasonable cost. It's just a half inch thick slab-o-aluminum with some holes drilled and a couple standoffs.

As for the blown 4v 5.4 in a stang thing... shit man, you're giving me a hardon. It'll totally be worth it. Plan on the car being down for a week or two though while you put all the odds and ends together. You can do the swap then worry about the blower bracket later if you want which will seriously help with getting the car back to drivable. Make sure and order a tune before hand. I'd call up Amazon Racing and ask Rick for one of his 5.4 tunes. That'll hold you till you can get to a dyno.

i really want a 5.4 thats has been a think that i have wanted since well hell forever. but i would like to know what all is involved in doin the 5.4 swap before i decide to do it. and there is a guy on mach 1 that did his 5.4 swap and i dont think he has any clearance issues.

i already have planed on it bein a week or more. luckily i have a shop at my disposal. we have one on base got lifts powertools hell you name it they got it there. so we will have everything needed to get the job done.

better news is the wife is cool with it too so just tryin to find out the info before hand. i really want a 5.4 so well see. thanks

it involves startlingly little. The whole swap thing is basically a short block and intake manifold swap. From the oil pan rail to the motor mounts 4.6 and 5.4 blocks are dimensionally identical. Above the top of where the 4.6 block's deck is, the 5.4 just keeps going for another ~1in. So, what you're going to end up doing is: taking your heads, oil pan, oil pump, oil pickup tube, accessories, and exhaust and swap them over to a 5.4L block, cap the front with the 5.4 4v specific (try to find a navigator unit) front cover, slap on your clutch and flywheel and then for the harder bits (which are still pretty easy):

You'll need to have the H-pipe mildly modded. Any exhaust shop will be able to complete the job in about an hour's worth of labor.

Call up Maximum Motorsports and get a set of their 1/2" k-member spacers. This will help bring your ram air scoop back to it's normal position relative to the hood and minimize the hassle. It also won't fuck up your front end geometry a whole bunch.

Intake manifold: I'd buy a set of intake adapter plates from Reichard Racing for your application. The Mach1 intake is really quite good and the plates aren't perfect but they're cheaper than most other solutions and stupid easy to install. Optionally, you can find some other 4v 5.4 intake manifold solution. The downside to any of the manifolds that didn't come with your car is that they mostly have a bad time fitting under the hood anyway. If you're ok with a different hood then I'll see what I can find in the way of practical suggestions for you (read ebay listings or retail products)

Since you have significant shop and tool resources at your disposal, consider this the funnest and easiest thing of its kind you'll ever do. It'll take about 2 days with a lift.
