auto trans?

hey everyone this is my first post on this board. i heard about it from a friend.
and i have a question i have a 2001 gt automatic i just bought not to long ago. Im wanting to put a exhaust system on it and i was wanting to get some opinions. first of all i was wondering what brand of long tubes will fit on an automatic i have heard that there are clearance issues? also i am going with a off road x pipe and i was considering the magnaflow magnapack catback.

magnapacks are pretty good sounding... if you have already made up your mind on an x thats fine but i would strongly recommend an H pipe if you want the sound.. seeming as there isnt much hp difference in h and x anyways... as for longtubes im not sure but someone else should chime in about clearence issues as i do not have after market headers.. but as for brands of headers i know hooker LT's are pretty sweet but like i said i have no idea about clearance.

cabotgsxr,
I can most certainly help and give you some advise. First off I agree with Stephen4036 about the h-pipe.

Now onto the question at hand, yes they do make headers for Autos and for Manuals and yes they are different. The difference - if I remember correctly - its been awhile is in the width of where the header connects to the crossover pipe. The reason is manuals are narrower in width than the auto.

Now I will tell you like everything else you get what you pay for. Sometimes the fit and finish is not the greatest. All of the Lts on the page below are all great quality. Another thing to remember is it is always best if lets say you buy a Mac brand longtube header to also buy one of there crossovers. You can make different brands go together but often times the fit and finish will leave something to be desired. There are some brands that won't line up properly - take it from experience.

X-pipes are more hollow and thin and H-pipes are thunderous and deep toned.

Hope this helps. Also for mufflers Magnapacks are great. Althought on a V8 Borla Stingers are awesome.

Did you pull the motor to install those?

blue02 01-03-2009 11:48 AM

Nope...dropped the K-member and lowered the motor about 3 inches. It was sorta a pain in the ass cause there was no clearance for any tools when tightening them onto the heads but I got it done in 3 days and it sounds great.

i just inalled Hooker Lts off road x and borla stingers on my 01 gt auto and it sounds insane! its really loud! but it still sounds good! we had to lift the engine out and it was still i PITA!

Im sorta in the same boat you are cabotgsxr. Ive owned 4 mustangs.... currently in a 03GT. I just recently purchased an offroad x with magnaflow mufflers and tips. Install is set for Feb. 7th. Im crossing my fingers that everything looks and sounds ok. I had offroad H with flows on my 89 5.0 and it sounded great. This will be my first time with X. Time will tell.
