Found a pretty nice underhood filter for my S-Trim, that I thought I’d share with you guys.

Since around 2001, I’ve been using a powerpipe with a cone filter in the fenderwell. The outlet pipe from my FMIC passes through the same fenderwell, so things get pretty cramped. Another problem is that the filter gets dirty very quickly. After about 5000 miles, its filthy.

So I’ve been looking for an underhood filter for everyday use, and came across this one from K&N (RC-5040). Its pretty big and fills the space perfectly:

Now, I’ve always been a little reluctant to do this because of the notion of the filter receiving “hot” underhood air (the whole premise of cold air intakes). But in this case, the filter is so close to the front of the car, I think its gets plenty of fresh air while driving. For example, it was a pretty cold night tonight, and after my 40 mile commute from work I immediately opened the hood and felt the filter. The metal part of the filter that you see in the photo was ice cold, which tells me that it gets a lot of air at highway speeds. In fact I think one of those open bottem funnel filters would actually be ideal. I happen to have one -this one is made by Vibrant Racing:

I’m going to be comparing these filters at the track, along with no filter and a homemade direct ram air rig that I made. Probably none of this will make a difference in ET/MPH, but it’ll keep me temporarily entertained.

Wonder if it will fit my setup

Be Careful with those cone filters, one we had one on a junior dragster and the center peice got sucked off. I imagine that getting sucked into your supercharger would not be good at all.

Im leaning towards the K&N. I will have to see the measurements 1st. The problem with the other one is that the cone is glued to that metal and like you said could be a disaster waiting to happen.
