What is a police interceptor motor?

Can anyone tell me anything about police interceptor motor..What so special about it, specs etc....

bassman97 02-06-2008 03:12 PM

Considering that all Mod motors share the same cam, heads, etc. (to an extent), the only thing that probably sets it apart from the regular 4.6 in the Crown Vic is a different computer program to run the engine.

this is the only thing that is diferint with the engine. the computer that they use has a higher goviner the rest is in the suspention.

zigzagg321 02-06-2008 04:01 PM

officer4c13 02-06-2008 06:37 PM

v6'stang 02-06-2008 07:19 PM

oh oh and don't forget they did sumthin' w/the transmission cooler, either gave it one or made it bigger or sumthin'.

officer4c13 02-06-2008 07:56 PM

well they are just made to be driven hard and not have a problem

03DSG 02-06-2008 08:45 PM

the engine cooling system on police cars is way better than any stock car. Your car will overheat long before a cop will.

flyinfox 02-06-2008 09:33 PM

bigger radiator , bigger altinator, a tranny cooler and a tune to make it run cooler incase of police chase and the 115 governor set to 135

dyno'd a cop once... made 190 to the tires through the auto. His car weight just at about 5200lbs loaded with all their crap. That car wouldn't ever see much more than about 135...ever.

EDIT: In fact ... I've never seen a cop do much more than about 120, well... except for the aircraft.

flyinfox 02-07-2008 09:41 AM

hey i was just telling you what the govenor was set at

r3dn3ck 02-07-2008 09:52 AM

I know... just sayin. Silly ass ford sets their limit above the actual limit... hehe fail.

bassman97 02-07-2008 10:55 AM

Kind of stupid how Ford down grades the cop cars from a 351 to only a 4.6. If you ask me, they should be built w/ the best engine Ford has to offer, like in the 60's. Hell, the 428 Shelby used were interceptor engines. A 5.4 SOHC/DOHC would have been a better choice to replace the 351.

Lazerred6 02-07-2008 12:39 PM

I wonder if the new Hurricane will find it's way into the next interceptor ford tries to make...... I hope it finds it's way into a future mustang I heard they were calling it the boss engine for awhile with a name like that it would be destined for a stang.

bassman97 02-07-2008 01:01 PM

Considering how the new Camaro and Challenger have 5.7, 6.1, and 6.2 engines, Ford would be foolish to try to have a 4.6 compete.

Or even a 5.4

officer4c13 02-07-2008 03:51 PM

thats why a lot of places are going to chargers as police cars thats what we did.

Before I put the 5spd in my old '95 P71, I did 145mph with 4.10 gears on the interstate. My speedo is off from the gears by 5mph, so it was more like 140mph. But the gov. kicked in at 145mph.

Now speaking of diffrent cop cars compared to the Crownvic. My dad has an old '93 P71 completly stock, bought at a state auction for $900, and when this thing see's 90mph getting on it(interstate ofcourse).....HANG ON! The car still feels like a V8 driving around, but compared to my Mustang at a speed like that, the Vic felt super strong!

stngmn96 02-11-2008 05:36 PM

As a member of the people who drive the vics, I am really hard on keeping the mustang crowd under control. I seldom write them the tickets, but the butt chewing is a different story. Let all the ricers get the attention from me and my brotherin. With that said, a vic can go faster than the 135 governor. I have had my previous 03 to just a titch under 150 on the interstate. My 07 is barely clicking 14000 miles and not even broke in, however it gets to 100 very quickly when moving. I don't care for off the line performance, but hey for a 4 door they don't do too bad.

jricde52 02-27-2008 02:45 PM

wasnt it the one they had in the crown vics?

stngmn96 03-01-2008 11:06 AM

The crown vic does suffer compared to the horsepower performance of the charger, but having driven a charger before at high speeds, the crown vic gets the nod in the suspension and steering department from me. You can drive one handed and be on the radio calling shit in at high speed and feel safe and in control with this car. I would like to see horsepower above the stock gt out of it, we all know ford can accomplish it. I agree though, for the vic to survive, it has to go bigger, stronger and faster than the competition and still maintain the toughness the vic is known for.
