headers

i am trying to get some headers for my 96 4.6 GT but i dont know if i should get the shorty's or the long tube?

B-rett 12-18-2007 03:23 PM

longtubes, shorties dont gain enough hp for the hastle

ca96redstang 12-18-2007 03:35 PM

nice iv been looking for them for a long time and i dint know with one to get. i just got a shift kit and a 4" intake. what do u think i should also do next

jjtgiants 12-18-2007 03:51 PM

do you live in Cali? If so I wouldn't do long tubes because you won't pass smog and they aren't exactly a mod you can swap whenever you have to pass a test.....the alternative is to find some shady shop to pass you :eek2:

nice tip i do live in cali. so what do u think i should go with?

You didn't finish reading my post. Below longtubes I said "then move".

Anyways if I were you I would skip the headers for now. You won't get much power from shorties and since install is a pain (or expensive if you don't do it yourself) it wouldn't be worth it imo.

Get some gears instead if you don't already have them and some sticky tires.

I talked to this mechanic over here and he told me that you can modify the long tube headers to make it pass the smog test and it legit

venom 12-19-2007 06:09 PM

You may want to try Midlength headers .

I'm sure someone has found a way to modify the headers to make them pass, but it's the visual test that will get you. If you really want long tubes then go for it and just find some shady shop in your nearest ghetto.

Venom makes a great suggestion about mid-length headers. I think they get about the same HP/TQ performance as long tubes and won't be as noticable if you get pulled over or have to pass a visual test. Also, they don't have the clearance issues long tubes have.

ca96redstang 12-20-2007 09:33 AM

cool i will defenetly look into the mid ones they are cheaper on the walet too

ca96redstang 12-20-2007 09:34 AM

ca96redstang 12-29-2007 11:10 AM

headers

i think im going with the mid lenght headers. so what do you guys think my next step should be. i want to get the most HP

TUFF 4.6 12-29-2007 07:12 PM

Gears 4.10's They will bring it to life. L/S differential and 31 spline axles.

WaterDR 12-30-2007 07:18 AM

If it were me and I were in your shoes, headers would be the last item on my list. While you could get away with it, they are 100% illegal in Ca. Stupid Ca does not allow you to make ANY exhaust modifications. Imagine all that work, cost and effort only to have to take them off. Second, they won't do much anyway on a stock application.....not worth the money IMO. Save your money and buy a super charger.

Gears? I would start there. Gears are a big bang for the $ spent. Throw on some 4.10's.

I live in Cali too... WaterDR is 100% right. Don't bother with headers till you have to. You don't want the 1000 dollar ticket. Aside from that, they're a world class bitch to install and only get you 15ish hp tops. Most shops will charge you 6-800 bucks just to install them.
