Faint coolant smell.

Guys. When I'm driving around I get a faint wiff on antifreeze.Expecially when i get on it.Not over heating or even running alittle hot.Check the hoses, can't see a leak.No drops under the car when parked either.Any ideas?

If the smell is strong inside the car could be a leaking heater core. If its from the outside of the car could be, any number of hoses have small cracks or manifold has small leak, gasket rips etc.... this is a tuff one to find the answer over the internet.

x2 about the heater core

Kains03GT 05-14-2007 04:11 PM

I was thinking that too.But all heater cores I've dealed with they leaked into the cab onto the floor a little.Never looked 4 the heater core on the mustang. Is it passenger side?Whats the best way to get a look at it?

You best to hope it's not the heater core as they are a pita to change....

Pray it's not a head gasket!

Kains03GT 05-20-2007 07:42 PM

How can you tell if its a head gasket?

v6'stang 05-20-2007 08:21 PM

loss of coolant, puddle under car or maybe a few drips, burning the coolant (white smoke?)

Kains03GT 05-21-2007 02:13 PM

nope,none of those

spike_africa 05-21-2007 04:03 PM

turn on your heat i bet it smells like like hot coolant once the motor is warm.

Kains03GT 05-21-2007 04:15 PM

I'll try it in the morning(too damn hot now..lol) And if it does smell like coolant? Is that the heater core?

yeppers, the heater core doesnt all just blow ans dump coolant down. My f150 got a big crack and leaked it into the ducts and it smelled like awsome hot coolant till i bypassed the heater core. Good thing florida doesnt get cold often as i never bothered to fix it lol.

Kains03GT 05-22-2007 02:45 PM

Ok I turned heat on full...No smell...Has to be a leaky hose when it's under higher pressure under full throttle. And I'm not sure if I'm getting use to it because I don't smell it every time.

v6'stang 05-22-2007 05:12 PM

hmm, this problem seems to be a sneaky sob...well you could get another person to give it a lil gas, get the rpms up there and look under the hood to see if ya have any leaks..and since they won't be acustomed to the smell, they might be able to point it out a lil better then you can since you've been around it for a bit now.

Might have to get a pressure tester so you can pressure up the coolant system to find the leak. I have on and they are very handy at finding small PIA leaks.
