driver side tap
 

i have an annoying tapping noise coming from the drivers side, it is loudest underneath the car. the noise only comes when in neutral or below 2000 rpms and goes away when the accelerator is pushed, a local shop said something about the manifold? any ideas as to what it is?

Def not the manifold. Im guessing this is a 5 speed? Probably something in your tranny or short block. Have you done anything to the car latley?

brand new tranny, yes 5 speed

Dont know much about 5 speeds, but maybe something needs to be adjusted, or was installed wrong.

Sounds like it also could be an exhaust leak. Probably a bad connection from the midpipe to manifolds/ headers. Id check for leaks in the exhaust system first.

on some aftermarket midpipes, the driver's side flange needs different studs in order to seal properly. the factory ones have a shoulder on them that prohibits the nut from tightening enough.

after getting underneath the car, it seems to be coming from the bellhousing

Not meaning to hijack the thread, but what studs are needed for the drivers side flange?

I'm not sure about other mid-pipes, but I know the classic complaint about the Mac mid-pipes was the drivers side flange that attaches to the manifold wasn't sealing so it was creating an exhaust leak. Like others have mentioed it was due to the ford studs having a shoulder on them that wasn't allowing the mid-pipe to seal up. Mac fixed this problem, and started including a sleeve for the drivers side flange. The way to fix the early problem was to purchase a stud kit from Napa Auto Parts (Part # 600-1819)

I think I have this same problem....as soon as I press the gas it goes away. Also when I got under the car, I noticed it wasn't coming from the exhaust either.
