winter project

I was currently planning on doing the PI swap and a SQ trim on my 97 Gt this winter, but have now decided not to do the complete heads...i dont want to have to worry about compression raising and plus the extra cash. I am still going to do the SQ trim mongoose kit ( and now i can run 10 lbs), and just a PI intake manifold...do you guys think this will still yield me some good hp?? Also, can i upgrade my current non pi cams, or isn't there any other cams that will compliment my non pi heads??

You can't run a PI manifold on NPI heads since the shape of the ports are different.

yes u can

96gtstang is right. Do a search on modulardepot.com Honestly, youd be a lot better off doing the heads.

theres an adapter plate you can buy to make them fit. I have an extra PI manifold sitting in my shed. It was a backup for n20 backfires, but now I have nothing to do with it. Maybe for sale soon.

You can definatley make some good power with that setup. You dont need PI heads to make more than 350whp on a vortech especially with 10psi. Consider methanol injection with a boost cooler kit.

r3dn3ck 11-03-2006 10:49 AM

you'll make more power with 6lbs of boost and 10:1 compression on PI heads than you will with NPI heads (unported) and 10lbs of boost. You should be able to get a good safe tune on pump gas.

Guaranteed. 10:1 does NOT mean you can't supercharge. It just means you should keep the boost reasonable. A forged bottom end in either case is a VERY good idea. 10psi is too much for a stock bottom end if you want it to last.

bassman97 11-03-2006 08:15 PM

Well, you can run it, but it makes no sense to since the ports don't match.

03gtmustang 11-03-2006 09:23 PM

Itll still give you an increase in power without spending the $300+ in heads and other stuff.

well i replaced mine with a 01+ manifold (my stock one cracked wher the thermostat goes) and it fits just fine and "supposedly" adda a couple of ponies i honestly diddnt notice a difference except for the fact that the coolant runner is aluminum now.

97stanger 11-04-2006 10:07 AM

well what do you think would be the best cams to run with the SQ trim setup and a PI intake...regular PI cams or VT stage 1's?? keep in mind i still have non pi heads...

03gtmustang 11-04-2006 10:14 AM

PI cams would be better then VT stage 1 NA cams. With the blower youll want blower cams.

97stanger 11-04-2006 10:17 AM

but since i still have non pi heads, wouldn't it benefit me more to just get PI cams than to spend the money on custom grind blower cams because i can't go very big anyway...

03gtmustang 11-04-2006 10:20 AM

Yes, you might as well just get PI cams.

97stanger 11-04-2006 10:21 AM

okay, thats what i thought, because i wont truly have the benefits of the VT's because of my non pi heads...do you think ill still make some good numbers with the SQ trim and powerpipe, PI intake, and PI cams??

03gtmustang 11-04-2006 10:22 AM

I think the heads will hold you back a lot. You could get some used PI heads and cams for about $300. A used PI intake for $100, then all you need are the gaskets.

97stanger 11-04-2006 10:24 AM

but im definately getting a blower for christmas...and i dont want to have to worry about compression problems and such, so if i had to pick one over the other id definately stick with a blower over the complete swap, thats why im still going to do the intake and cams to get some extra ponies...

03gtmustang 11-04-2006 10:28 AM

Well how much is the blower going to cost?

97stanger 11-04-2006 10:31 AM

4 grand for a mongoose kit and boost pipe shipped to my house...meaning im getting the maf, injectors, fuel pump, blower, everything for the install

03gtmustang 11-04-2006 10:32 AM

Maybe you could spend a little more and get a built short block and some PI heads and whatever cams you want.

97stanger 11-04-2006 10:34 AM

but i would never be close to the hp id be at by spending the amount im going to spend for the blower/intake/cams...

97stanger 11-04-2006 10:35 AM

btw...do you know a site where i can get some new PI cams?

I'd do what 03gtmustang said. Your bottom end will take a dump if you beat on it much. And even if you think you won't,you will.:hittingthefan:

03gtmustang 11-04-2006 01:18 PM

Just because you dont have the same amount of power doesnt mean the car wont be fast. I ran 12.7 in my car with bolt ons and nearly stock suspension with a messed up converter and I only had 262rwhp. People are running 12.5's with similar mods through their auto. Its not all about power.
