K and N filter for 05-06

Quick question for the '05-'06 owners, does a K and N drop in (no change to intake system) filter add any HP. A friend of mine heard it actually loses power unless you get it re-tuned so I told him I would try and find out. I know you need a re tune if you get a CAI but I wouldn't think a K&N stock replacement (that really doesn't flow much better than a brand new paper filter) would cause any tune issues?

You only need to do the retune when you replace the entire tract from filter to throttle body. A simple K&N stock replacement filter won't require a retune.

pulling the emissions filter that sits a little further up the tube and replacing the filter with a K&N should net you a pretty nice gain for the money (probably 5hp). Both of those things are fairly stout restriction points.

Thanks guys

Thanks...I am actually the friend who cobra1923 was referring to...and I admit to being a little wet behind the ears with all the mods and fine tuning. Cobra1923 has been a great source of inspiration to me...now if I can only find the money to make all his suggestions come true.

I am not sure what emissions filter you are referring to in your statement. But am I correct to assume if I just drop in the K&N air filter and do nothing else I will not have any increase in performance or hp? Is that a safe assumption? Thanks!

Yes r3dn3ck, where is this emissions filter you speak of and is it there on the 4.0's as well? Sounds like a free mod, which is the best kind.

Late 05's and 06's do no have the carbon trap installed, (Excluding Ca, Wa, Ny, Nj) I used the drop in filter for a short time and I noticed minimal gains, then I orderd the K&N Aircharger No tune needed, I noticed a bit more power. I was still not happy with that so I got the JLT II and SCT Tuner All I can say is WOW different car :-)

in the intake tube on what appears to be early 05's and any car coming into my state, there's a little filter dealie that absorbs hydrocarbon vapors. It's the equivalent of a large cork and can be removed for an instant but small gain.

A K&N filter will probably net you a few hp but you won't be able to feel it if it's just the filter. A full FIPK or any of the BBK/Steeda/JLT/etc... intake pipes and a good tune with an Xcal will have you seeing 20+hp gains.

Thanks! That's the answer I was looking for!
