I just bought a 2004 GT with 4.6, 25,000 miles
when i first start the engine, i hear a ticking from
top of the motor, lifters it goes away when the oil
pressure comes up, 1 sec maybe 2 sec u can hear it.

it will do it when cold or hot sometimes it don't
do it at all. someone @ ford told me it might be
the timing chain tensioners seals leaking the oil
down to the crank case,
i have heard this on several mustangs
anyone else have this issue- i use
5-w20 motorcraft oil and filter
is this a ford thing.

 

my f150 did it aswell its just the lifters getting oil, dont worry you engine wont blow (if thats what it is).

 

the lifters (actually lash adjusters) are just pumping up. My 01 and 03 both did it from day one. My 03 continues to this day. The tick goes away after just a few seconds to a minute depending on how cold the night was.

No worries... it's not a bad thing. You'll know it's bad when it's bad cuz it'll sound just exactly as bad as it possibly could and it won't stop after a few minutes.

 

I was going to say if this lasted for more than a couple of minutes then you might have spun a bearing. That would suck. But I believe redn3ck's is the proper answer.

what about the seals / O ring leaking behind the

a Tech @ ford told me it might be the seals / o ring leaking the oil

You can check to see if it is your timing chain tensioners. Get in like you are going to start your car but before you turn the key press your gas pedal all the way down and hold it. With the gas pedal down turn the key to start your car and hold it until your oil pressure comes up. Then turn off your key and try to start your car normally. If you have the gas pedal pressed all the way down when you try to start it it won't crank over so don't worry about that. What this does is build up your oil pressure, in return "pumping" up your tensioners. If it doesn't tick when you try to start afterwards then that is probably the problem.

If it is a constant ticking, i.e. when you're driving, reving, etc. then it is most likely a spun bearing [ the mechanic said spun rod bearing ]. I had the same problem and luckily i work at a car dealership and had it fixed for $200.00. Some of the dealerships said my engine was blown and that I needed a new engine. Which, is funny now that I look back at it. Besides if my engine was blown then my car would have no power...

 

I had the same problem with tensioners. It made the same noise and everything. I even posted a video on this website but the ticking noise was inaudible over the exhaust. My guess is to say you're probably correct. My tensioners were not getting any oil pressure from sludge (probably due to the first 62K miles put on the engine by another owner). I got it replaced under third party used car warranty for a 100bucks. I got new chains and guides too.
