Default HPS Hardball'r Intake First Dyno results.

Hey guys:

I got a ping from the guys over at Hi Performance Solutions yesterday. It seems they've done their first dyno test with their new intake and it's pretty good stuff.

First, please don't go looking for 20hp gains... there's just not enough restriction in the stocker to limit peak power much till RPM goes higher than stock. What you're looking at is the area under the curve and the average power.

They did 2 runs on a cammed long-tube car. One was with the stock plastic job and the other was with their new aluminum intake.

Here's how it broke down:
To start....
The test car looks like it had too much cam to start with. TQ didn't even start picking up until 2850rpm and HP was absent until about there too. Once it picked up it built and held power well but dropped off at the top thanks to the limits of the plastic intake. We all know after 5500 rpm the stocker just doesn't cut the mustard well.

After the HPS intake, the TQ starts picking up WAY sooner and by the looks of the graph you start getting tq build at about 2300rpm. HP does the same basic thing. Effectively the HPS intake gives a cammed car back the 2000-2500rpm range that was choked out of it by the aggressive bumpsticks.

All that aside, you can see that the power curves are more stable and the HP doesn't lean over at high rpm. I think if the tester motor could have turned 6500rpm it would have had that monster gain everyone is looking for... or if it were slapped on a 5.4L with adapter plates.

I don't want to say it's the best thing since sliced bread but it's a nice intake that extends the useful RPM range and doesn't really lose power anywhere. TQ and HP are both up and the area under the curve has been significantly extended.

From my experiences in the past, I'd bet that the thing took an over cammed, peaky power band with no low end and a weak top end and made it all around better performing particularly at the higher and lower engine speeds. I haven't seen any graphs from dyno's of the PP intake but I'd like to.... if any of you have charts from them, post up.

What do you think? Is all that ^^^ stuff up there greek to you or do you even care?

We all know my bias... what's yours?

Can't wait until they make the 5.4 intake. That will be awesome and technically they could test it against the truck intake and the 4.6 with adapter plate setups for a comparison for the 5.4.

Can't wait for the 5.4 intake. I think the 4.6 unit and plates will still show good numbers. We'll see soon.

looks pretty good power wise, but timeslips really show me if its worth it or not.

w00t! agreed. I'm fairly certain that it'll do MUCH better on a 5.4 even with plates. Price point is a little higher than the PP intake but for nitrous users I can't think of anything better.

I'm thinking of building a kit that will allow a direct port system of sorts to be installed inside the lower plenum so it'll be invisible under the hood but I'll have to get a production unit to develop it on first.

What do you guys think of such a thing? Would you buy such a system if it were offered as an option or from a separate company altogether? If there's enough interest I'll push for it.

that's exactly what I mean. best part is... wet kit feeding directly into the runners means no fuel puddling.

Im also going to run before and after test on my manifold. It came in today and it is heavy! I cant wait to slap her on.

it won't really matter if it's 4.6 or 5.4... the kit will be the same. IIRC you got a HPS to test right?

My design work is nearly complete. It's set right now to use uni-directional spray bars at each inlet runner opening and a common distribution block inside the manifold plenum. All plumbing will be AN going to the manifold and stainless steel tubing from the distribution block to the spray bars. Since I don't have a test unit to develop on I'll have to wait on getting any prototypes for a while yet.

In the short term I don't have any plans to include solenoids or switches in the design as those are common to all systems and the only real difference is the location and type of delivery aparatus.

I'll try to get a decent schematic of the thing together and post it. You can build the delivery end of the system for about 150-200 bucks (probably less) and it will require drilling and tapping at least 18 holes, only 2 of which will be through the plenum body. I'm going to see if HPS is interested in supplying the intakes with the holes drilled at the runner inlets as an up-option model for those that want such a thing.
