some advice needed...

ok, i have searched through many threads and I havent found a real good answer. now to the problem: they other day i was driving down a side street with cars on both sides. so sound was bouncing real good in to the cabin. what i heard bothers me greatly, i have a tick tick tick sound coming from under the car and it goes up as my rpm's go up. but as soon as there is nothing beside my to reflect the sound at me i cant hear it.

now i know the injectors make some noise, but i've never heard this before and bought this car brand new. i have listened under the hood while pulling slightly on the TB to rev the engine but i really cant hear the tick, mostly the injectors. also i've gotten under my car while running and had someone else pull on the TB, but still i cant really hear the tick that well. but whenever im close to another car or wall i can hear it very well, like its being amplified.

after talking with some people i've gotten different possibilities such as exhaust leak, valve train, or even my throw out bearing. but im not really sure which way to go at this. IMO i dont think its an exhaust leak, i only have a cat back and that bitch is on there tight. maybe valve train cause last oil change i went from 5w20 too 5w30. and maybe throw out bearing, i do have manual, but i only have 40k on the car. not to say i baby it, but i dont treat my car like crap either. any suggestions would be great, i know the limitations of only being able to describe the problem but some advice is better than none.

i think i know what u are talkin about...as u accelerate, there is like a pop or a loud tick just one tho, maybe followed by a few others but spaced out.....i have a 98 gt and i have noticed that mine makes this tick also, dont know if it is clutch related or what but i would also like to know

the tick is constant, and its speed it directly related to my rpm's. when they go up, the tick increases speed as well, and it doesnt stop.

word diagram:> tick tick tick tick tick tick tick tick ticktickticktick ...etc...you get the idea

could be the beginnings of rod bearing failure or more likely you have a little valvetrain noise. You can also hear the injectors pulsing sometimes which increases in rate just the same but is much quieter than mechanical problems like those I mentioned.

Almost every 99-04 mustang I've driven (and there are dozens of them) including mine, most of them had some faint ticking that was audible at idle but I could never hear it over my engine while cruising next to a sound wall.

FWIW, When it's a problem, you'll KNOW FOR SURE becuase the ticking will be audible from just about anywhere and with the hood open you can hear it plain as day. If it's a rod bearing you'll usually hear it suddenly appear after a certain RPM. In any case, I wouldn't trip too much right now. If you can't hear it with the hood open it's probabaly not a problem.

Have you done any exhaust modifications? Midpipe?

When I first got my long tubes and x-pipe installed the pipes didnt match up so it caused a ticking sound from the leak. And as I acclerated the ticking sped up.

Take into account my title by my screen name, when reading this.

Did you have your A/C on? My 2005 GT makes a very audible and distinct tick/tink sound when the A/C is on.

I think alot fo folks hear that if they've replaced their factory mid-pipe. Initially it sounds like a leak but I've gone over my exhaust a couple of times and can't ID any leaks at idle so I've writtten it up as misc exhaust noise

that's kind of what I've made of it. I don't think it's a bad thing probably. Just an artifact of re-engineering the sound quality in general.

no mid pipe change, just a cat back that i've had for over 2 years with no issues. i guess i'll just let it go until it becomes louder and really seems like an issue.
