Speed Odometer Program Kit

Hi All I'm a Newbie,

I'm looking to buy a 2000 GT Mustang-5speed-V8. The only owner decided to (I think the correct term is) add a gear in the rear end. When this happened it messed up the odometer reading. When you drive it if you're going 45 mph it reads well over 100mph. I had my mechanic check it out and he said the only way to fix it is to get a speed odometer program kit to have it re-programmed then it would have to be recalibrated. I'm clueless here on where to start to find how much this is going to cost and where to get the program as well as who should do the labor for me. Any suggestions would greatly be appreciated.

Thanks for your time,
Babyjo

do you know what ratio the guy put in? Thats a pretty big difference in revs, how is your gas mileage?

If its a 5 speed, a speed cal is the way to go. If you have an automatic the only option is a programmer or chip.

Speed Odometer Program Kit

do you know what ratio the guy put in? No I do not nor does the dealer :(

Thats a pretty big difference in revs, how is your gas mileage? I've only test drove it 2 times.....so I really don't know how the gas mileage is. :(

If its a 5 speed, a speed cal is the way to go. >>>>This is a 5-speed. Do I still need to get the program kit to re-program before calibrating?

Thanks alot for helping me here! :)

you need to find out from the dealer the guys name and phone number and ask him what the gear ratio is that he put in it. And the dealer should bealbe to give you this, so if they say no give them hell.

oh yeah also you can carfax it for the other onwers name and stuff right? i think when you do that it gives you atleast there full name.

couple of other things to consider

What size wheel and tire are you running? If they are smaller than the 17 inch stock setup it would add to the problem..

Also, does it still have the stock gauge faces? They should be black faced with green numbers..

I can't imagine what would throw it off that much unless someone seriously jacked up the speedo or your running 6:11's

Yeah thats double, i cant imagine, even starting out for 2.73s Going to even 4.30s wouldnt throw it off that much, Unless the trans was changed and your trans speedo drive gear is 2 teeth different??

Im using a dallas mustang speedometer calibrator to fix mine. you can go to www.dallasmustang.com and get one. They are around $100 shipped.

but even buying that. If your speedo is showing over 100mph when your going 45, i doubt it would fix it.

You need to look on the tag on your rear to see what gears it came with then jack your car up and turn the rear wheels and see how many times your driveshaft turns just to get the wheel to turn once, And thats your rear ration. As in if your drive shaft turns a little more that 4 times to the wheel turning once, then u know you have 4.10s.

You need to find if the tranny was changed, I cant imagine, those numbers you say 45 to over 100 could be true no matter what the previous owner did??

Any good mechanic would know how to determine what your gear ratio is simply by jacking the rear up, and rotating the rear wheels and counting the revolutions of the axle vs. the revolutions of the rear wheels.

If the ratio is 4.10:1 then you have 4.10's, etc...

Your speedo is off to far for this to be a gear issue. I predict that the previous owner swapped gears and also tried to calibrate the sppedo and dicked it up. If I were you, I would wonder about the amount of miles on the car too. If the speeedo is off by a factor of two, then so is your odometer.

Yeah that speedometer is WAY off. Back when I had my v6 I went from 2.73s or whatever they were to 4.10s, and I could hit about 70 before my speed limiter kicked in reading 115.

The speedcal is the way to go... makes it very easy and its only $100.
