Default Automatic shift knob replacement

I just bought one of the replacement shift knobs for my '01 GT. A buddy of mine said I'd have to wire the O/D button switch contacts, but I can't see how to get the original one off - and what about the locking button? All I can see on the new knob is that it screws on. Advice on performing this replacement would be greatly appreciated!
