Gear install, question!
 

So, monday im supposed to go get my 4:10's gears installed. $250

This place specializes in mustangs, they said they can do it in about 3 hours.

They quoted me 250 for the gears and 75 for the install kit installation.

They said since i have 16k miles on my car that i dont need to have the install kit installed and that i oughtta just send it back.....

Does this sound right???????????????????

Yep all I needed was the Gear oil.

The shop that will install my gears specializes in drivelines. They are gonna use the install and bearing kits. They told me they do that no matter what mileage.

My installer said no.He said just go and have fun.He builds race cars so I trust him!!

The installer for my gears told me 300miles of easy day to day driving.

The guy thats installing mine said he needs at least a new pinion bearing just in case the old one is damaged during removal. I'm just gonna get the master bearing kit to be on the safe side. God, my federal return is slow this year!

i plan to get mine done sometime. guy is gonna do it for $150. He is on tidewater racing forum. his name is "twisted 2 go" and people say he does a good job. He told me all i need is the gears and oil. I need to pick up some oil btw. I plan to use the royal purple oil since it has the friction modifier in it. Now to ask MT if they can hook me up :)

holy ****, 250 dollars. Man, the ford dealership at my area quoted me a grand. And a local speedshop quoted 650. Man, it'd be worth it to freakin drive to CO and save myself a few hundred dollars!!!!

CJ Pony did mine in Harrisburg. The entire swap ran me $550 including gears, kit, and labor. So, I believe the labor was around $250. I have 40k on the car at the time. I bought the gears at MT.

New pinion shaft bearing and carrier bearings are a good idea. The pinion bearing is pressed on, therefore to remove it involves a press (or a hammer). I personally wouldn't reuse the bearing if it was forcefully removed. Also, there's a good chance that the pinion shaft and bearing may require a few blows to get out of the rear housing. With low mileage, axle bearings would not need replaced, so the "master" kit wouldn't be needed. As far as break in, I was told to do a couple of back and forth turns at low speed top slosh around the oil/friction modifier and make sure it coated everything inside but to go "hog wild" after that. (FWIW) The tech that did mine said that he didn't recommend synthetic lube in the back, he said Ford did it from the factory for awhile and it was too slippery for the traction lok to work properly and they eventually went back to old school gear lube and modifier? Sounded logical to me bacause when I went to the Ford garage, the Parts Manager asked me if my car had the synthetic or non-synthetic lube (there actually was a tag on the rear that identified the lube).. So they must have offered both, at least in '02.

With 16k, i think you are ok without the install kit. Break in? Eh, whats that. I was redlining mine on the way home from the shop and that was more than a year ago, almost two, and no problems here.

I got several quotes like that too. This place specializes in mustangs. you want to look for either a place where you can get yer engine built, or some dude who knows how to do it out of his garage. Stay away from the mainstream places, they will charge you an arm, leg, and first born child.

I paid 300 total for my installation...that included install, new pinion bearing and gear oil. The 4.10's were like 200 bucks on sale, I didn't get the install kit cause the FRPP gears come with the shim kit. As far as a break-in your supposed to do a few heat cycles which is driving the car till it's warm then letting it cool down, I did this like 5 times then took it easy for about 200 miles just to be safe.

You live in SC right? If so were did you get yours done at, and how much did it cost? I'm going to have to get mine redone eventually.

With gears you will know if they are installed right,from the first time you drive it.There is nothing too break in.

no break in period. just for the first couple days, turn ur radio off, and open the windows and listen for gear chatter

I thought u knew everything... guess not.... anyway that shop is probly not doing you right - you should go ahead and replace the bearings and races - nt doing so is just cheap and unwise - theyre are things that happen during installs that you need to just be on the safe side - i did mine at 10k - they recommended i change the races - and had never beaten the rearend.... so if u havnt done it already - then go ahead and get the races - cheap insurance for something you DONT want to fugg up. and theyre price is high - my did it for 200 - including oil - i provide the kit and gear

dannyb785, when i was in Panama city beach, i had Panhandle Performance do my gear install for 200 bucks, little closer drive. Here in SC, the locals try to charge 400 or more and the real performance shops charge 250 bucks.

--I would still have a break in period, just incase.
