Default Catalytic Converter

This doesn't have to do with my stang, but hopefully someone knows. My winter beater that I bought failed the emission. Im 99% sure that i need to replace the catalytic converter. I had a shop tell me it would be about a $300 job. :surrender Can I do this myself? Does it need to we welded at all? or is it just clamps and shizzle? It would be A LOT cheaper to do it myself. Any info will help...
