Who's huntin?
I've got the countdown clock running. 9 days 13 hous 25 minutes and counting.
We're going out just as the rut is kicking into high gear, there'll be no nighttime moon and it's been raining in my hunting grounds for the last week. This is going to be awesome. In Kalifornia we never get to hunt the rut so this is a first. The cool summer and early fall cool-off has caused them to start rutting almost 2 months early.
I'll be hittin' the timber for about 7 days. Hoping to come back with this year's supply of meat. Last years kill was just finished off about a week or 2 ago. Man I hate store bought meat.
I'm gunna use my M1 carbine this year. Sick of heavy *** guns. I don't need a scope. I need more bullets. hehehehe .
Now, tell us your hunting plans.

My hunting plans don't start untill mid October. I will be scouting the woods we have behind the house untill the season starts in November.
I bought a new rifle with the money I got for my birthday. It's a Marlin XL7 in 30-06, in case you were wondering. It's a great shooting gun, I sighted it in at 100 yards in five shots. I hope to find more time to practice shooting with it.

7-mag is fine. Shoot em in the neck or really low on the body and you won't mess up a lot of meat. I know what it does at close range and if you smack it in the shoulder... bad things (my first deer was 35 feet away broadside 3/4 down angle and I hit him smack through the heart... wrecked a lot of meat). If you just open up the chest cavity and their heart and lungs fall out or break their head off though it's usually a pretty quick drop.
My 2nd deer with the same gun, shot just behind the leg a bit low on the ribs from 65 yards and it split that chest open like an overfilled balloon. Lungs destroyed, heart bruised badly, both hanging out of the chest. Good blood trail for about 50ft then he collapsed and died.
There's no such thing as too much gun if you aim somewhere appropriate. If you hit it with that 7 mag almost anywhere but an extremity it's going to go down. The damage is tremendous. So just pick a spot like the neck, throat or low on the middle rib cage.

Bow season begins mid-October. I go here and there during bow season. Muzzle comes in mid- November but thats not for me. Rifle comes in the weekend after Thanksgiving. I have a spot in the woods where I use a 12 guage shotty. Its scoped and also has a rifled barrel that shoots 3-inch slugs. I have several fields to hunt. I use the trusty Remington 270 bolt action for her. Mornings im usually in the woods, evenings ill move to the field. Happy huntin' everyone.

What I will give them credit for is they usually try and get in pretty far. I have learned to find places full of road hunters and then get in a mile or so. Plenty of game there.
get a hunter safety cert in your state, come on out. I'll take ya.

yeah, ********. That's what we call them. They'll get a group of 10-20 guys and go out and scare the **** out of all the game, shoot a tiny *** pitiful tick ridden buck and act like it was anything but a barely legal **** buck. They leave a crap ton of trash strewn about and worst of all... they cook that *** smelling dog **** full of dried fish in the field. The last thing you want in the field is strong smelling food. They never do a diet flush to clear their skin of the smell of their food so if you see em, hunt somewhere else cuz' the game knows they're there and they leave.

Say i were to use the 7mag on a deer. What would be the best place to shoot one if it didnt have a trophy rack or anything, while ruining only the least amount of meat? Also whats it take to be certified? The thing that i dont like about that 7mag is yea, the damage really is tremendous. Had to shoot a rabbid dog with it once, was nothing but gore.
To get certified you have to take a hunter safety education course. Look up or call your wildlife resource agency in your state and find out when and where these courses take place. Usually they are held over a weekend and are free or a very small fee, but worth it.

Exactomundo.
For those that don't understand: velocity creating kinetic energy for penetration is only a small part of how high powered rifle (those exceeding 2000fps) bullets work. When the bullet hits the bow shock causes the tissue to spread away from the bullet (only the front of it really ever touches much, the sides are partially spared the contact). This causes a temporary hole that can easily (with a 7mag) be 2 feet across. It's like putting the bullet into the critter in the middle, and then inflating it to 2 feet across for a split second and then deflating it again. Damage is done. The permanent cavity is all the tissue that was actually crushed by the frontal aspect of the bullet and is a much smaller hole. You usually see the effect of the temporary cavity on the exit wounds. They can be several times the expanded diameter of the bullet. Just depends on how fast it was moving when it exited.
So, when I use a 7mag any more (rare... my shoulder hates that gun) I aim for the middle neck. If it hits anywhere on their neck it'll ****** near blow their head clean off. My first deer at 35 feet with that gun and a broadside shot blew up the whole right side of the thing. Bloodshot meat for 2 feet from the entrance wound. That's why the neck is so great... not much volume of tissue for the shock wave to propagate down. Usually just breaks the neck and blows up the big arteries in the neck. They go down pretty fast.

Bow shock build approaching mach 3

Notice in the 2nd one how the wave gets wider and wider the closer you get to mach 3... Mach 1 is about 1150fps. 7mm Remington Magnum makes 2900-3400fps.
Here's a deer shot in the neck. Notice the speed of death. A very humane way to harvest das critter

This one you can see the head and neck become 2 objects only held together by skin

You need to check with your wildlife resource agency, here in TN you have to register for a landowners agreement, basically saying that close relatives of the landowner can hunt on the property without having a fishing/hunting license(not hunters safety course license) or having to tag the deer.

i miss hunting, i use to go when my grandparents had some land but now i have no place near. my stepbrother always asks me if i want to go with him but his lease is far and he usually takes off days in the middle of the week to go. i have an old british 303 that was my grandfather's. that is what i use to hunt with. that beast hasn't been fired for years

Even invasive species require a license. Hunting or fishing of course as appropriate.
My first deer that I shot was with a .50 muzzleloader with 150g of black powder and I think a 180 or 200 grain bullet, I hit it in the exact middle of the neck and needless to say that sucker dropped like a sack of potatoes.

So any update of what i would need to hunt on my property? Also, for say a mid-large sized deer, my main options for rounds are between 145-160grain rounds. Should i buy any certain type of rounds? Or just stick with something simple such as these?
