Poll: New 5.4 intake

Does the impending availability of an intake designed for 5.4 2v's to bring the power range up to 3000-6500+ rpm make you think about swapping to a 5.4 in your mustang differently than the HPS intake did?

01FR500 04-15-2010 11:12 AM

Where is the current powerband for the intake? I do most of my daily driving below 3K, so it does not make it more appealing to me for that aspect. I would rather have more power a little lower. However, while on the open track, how often do I go below 3K, probably not a lot.

r3dn3ck 04-16-2010 08:25 AM

The HPS is at its best from 1500-5500. It's very much a street intake with great low-mid range. Top end suffers a bit but average tq is very high.

The new one would likely be at it's best from 3000 north of 6500.

Note: It will likely require about a 2.5 - 3" cowl hood. I'm hoping a 00' R hood will fit but I'm going to do some measuring for them off my motor so we can see what there is to work with based on a stock hood. Since I have a giant hole in my hood it'll be easy to measure. Maybe it'll clear a 2.5" which would clear a 00' R hood.

Cmon' guys, need more vote-y goodness. Post up opinion and questions if you'd like. The results of this are getting sent to people who make decisions on matters of great importance to the project.

We have more members that this... VOTE!

GDP 04-20-2010 10:32 AM

I think its pretty obvious that those who have not yet vote, dont really care about this.

r3dn3ck 04-20-2010 10:44 AM

Must suck to be that wrong all at one time and then to prove it out by positive action on your own part.

Clearly, you don't give 2 squirts of cold piss about 5.4's judging by your answer, yet you cared enough about the subject to vote. Why would you do that? Well, because it's the internet and you're entitled to your own e-pinion which you can't help but post up for all to see, just like everyone else. Eventually you'll get bored and look for threads you've not read yet and then, the poll has you by the short and twisties. So, hush on up now because your actions and your comments formed an oxymoronic tour d'force that required me to have to type way too much.

You mad brah?

Lazerred6 04-20-2010 11:08 AM

How much of a peak HP difference do you predict?

If one intake gives more peak power but the other makes more power under the curve will the difference be noticable?

would the new intake that makes power at higher RPMS benefit more from 4.30s or an even steeper gear?

I don't even have a stang anymore but I'm bored.

stanger00 04-20-2010 11:15 AM

What will the pricing ball park be for this intake?

I dont see how the power range being from 3k to 6500 leds one to believe that power will be disappointing below its effective range. I could be wrong but I am willing to believe that with this improved intake and matching components to compliment it will produce more torque and hp than the majority of 4.6 liters out on the road.

If I were in the market I would show more interest. If I could build a modular to produce similar power as my current problematic supercharged 4.6 for not a ton of money than I would go for it.

no, just being snarky about pointing out something stunningly funny and ironic. don't be hurt.

gains depends on the build. Obviously the badder the motor, the less good the hardball'r will be and the more use the single plane will be. Power under the curve is likely to increase for 2 primary reasons: 1. The motor is a hugely under-square long rod stroker so tq production even with the wildest top end shouldn't be a really big deal, and gears are chosen based on operating RPM range so something like 3.73's or 4.10's would more than make up the difference. 2, The case of too much cam and not enough carb is basically the same problem what is being tackled. A motor with a big cam and high flowing heads is already biased to higher rpm. The intake needs to be as well in that application.

I have 3.55's on mine wtih comp 270's and it's got more tq than I know what to do with. Bigger gears would only make it harder to plant the power at this point. When I get the new intake on it (prays) I'm hoping for 15-20hp with the extra 1200rpm. The heads are a limiting factor for my combo then.

an MMR motor (check the corral) with TFS heads, adapter plates and a edelbrock intake at 12:1 compression with a pretty ratty cam, but missing on 1 cylinder made 350rwhp at 5000rpm and was still climbing before the run was aborted. Pretty sure you're going to start seeing some 400rwhp NA 5.4 2v's pretty soon.

Starting to look more tempting...I'm sure I could part out my motor and supercharger to cover a huge chunk of this bill.

If you end up doing this, I'm calling dibs on your power pipe.

r3dn3ck 04-21-2010 07:31 AM

oh... predicted pricing info is listed on mhs's site as being in the 6-700 range. It will of course also require an elbow but there are already 4150 flange adapters available if you want to use a stock mustang elbow on top, or the buyer can use a proper elbow like a 6061.com unit or a spyder if they want to fab a bit. Think something like...

this: http://www.6061.com/IMG_0414-48-8.jpg

Only a bit bigger.

As long as you dont mind the 1.5" tube sticking out the side of it where a Vortech mini race is connected. :D

Great price on the intake. Those 6061 pieces are top notch and cost as much as they look. I also hope this will clear the Cobra R hood. If I end up getting a contract job for a year in Doha, Qatar I will be more inclined to doing this swap.

I'm sure I can plug it up.

Maybe you should just ditch that Cobra R Hood as well. haha
