Wireless Router???
 

I'm moving to a location where basically Comcast is the only high speed internet provider.

I opted not to have Comcast install the wireless router cause they wanted $150 to do it.

Here is what I want to do. I want Wifi throughout the house, and have the option to have multiple devices run off the Wifi signal (laptop, Wii, printer, 2 iphones). I also want to be able to hook my xbox 360 up through an ethernet line.

My question is......I know I need a wireless router to hook up to the modem, but I have no idea which one to get that will allow me to do things I mentioned above? Are there any other things that I need to make a wireless router work with Comcast's modem?

I run my computer, laptop, iphone, printer and use to run my xbox off it till the xbox crapped out. They also have a wireless N whatever that is (i think its newer technology) mines the wireless G as linked above and it works great.

I would get a Linksys WRT54GL and then install the DD-WRT firmware. This should allow you to do everything you need to do and more.

You can just get your own router and save 100 bucks. Even if you have to get a friend or someone to set it up for you they wont charge but like 25 bucks.

I use linksys.. WRT54G2 is a good cheap effective router. Just follow the instructions step by step and you cant go wrong. It will automatically set it self up.

I use a belkin Wirless N. the Ns are compatable with the G and crap. I run my Laptop, Desk Top through the wireless part and i have my PS3 and 360 through the wired part. All you will need is a Wireless router. you will run a ethernet cable from the modem to the Wireless router and you will be good to go. Most Wireless routers have 4 ports on the back to use for all your wired needs!

When I do purchase a wireless router I know Comcast won't walk me through the install because it's not their product.....do most of the routers come would good instructions and is it hard to set up?

Sorry, I'm a total novice with this stuff. Currently we have AT&T U-Verse so the tech did all the work, but I can't get AT&T at my new place.

yeah its basically impossible to screw up. Trow the start in disc it will tell you when to plug the router in follow the steps and your done. The only thing you type in is what you want the routers name to be called and a password. I don't know anything about networking really and I was able to set everything up simply

For one, great job on not taking Comcast's wireless. Not only do they charge you out the ass overtime, but generally their products suck too.

Secondly, for a router that will give you the best bang for your buck I'd look at a Linksys with N-Wireless. There is N and G-wireless, N being the faster system with the greater range as well. Linksys makes an awesome product and generally are the easiest to set-up. They'll come with a disk you put in the computer and it runs you through it perfectly so don't sweat it too much.

Thirdly is security, make sure you put a password on the wireless so your neighbors don't hack it and so people can't fuck with it.


Another hint, don't EVER go wireless with the Xbox 360. It's generally a pain in the ass and is slow as fuck especially if it's far away from the router and if you don't have the new n-wireless adapter. Stick with ethernet and be done.

I work at Best Buy and I will say that the D-link's are pretty much junk. Linksys and Netgear are what you want, even Belkin's are pretty crappy for what you pay and in comparison to the two mentioned above.

Dude, unless you have NO other option, dont go wireless. Ive had so much fucking trouble with wireless routers and internet its un fuckin believable. Go wired unless you have no other solution.

Well, I ran every room in my house (two in the living room, one in the kitchen, and one in each bedroom) with Cat5e+ /cable, but I still run the laptops on wireless WEP encrypted. I've had several people come over and connect directly with their laptops with no problem.. Sounds like you has problems with tha intrawebz.

I have just a regular $60 linksys wireless router and it works just fine with my comcast. I have my xbox hooked up to the router, and then all my laptops and phones work fine with it. I have a wireless printer as well. You don't need anything too fancy.

Thanks everyone for the advice. I'm probably making this way more difficult than it is, but the AT&T U-verse wireless has worked perfectly and so I'm trying to keep that quality of service using different products.

I'd had really been leaning towards the Dlink Dir-655 Xtreme N Gigabit router, but most people seem to suggest Links or Netgear so I'll go that route.

I agree about trying to use wireless for xbox 360.....not worth it. I don't really use the online features on the Wii, but it's nice to be able to get system updates.

I have found Linksys/Cisco to be the easiest to setup with there directions and if you need to call in for support. Being that they are now owned by Cisco they rather on top of there technology.

I would go for the ( N ) standard router, its the newest technology and carries the highest signal bandwidth compared to ( G ) . And what is kewl is if you find certain areas of your house that is getting week signals compared to others. Is get a second wifi router and have them use the same Sec. Key and just make sure there on two different signals. Then you can be on your laptop or iphone and not lose any connectivity between the 2 areas since they will use the same Sec Key and this is called floating a internet connection.

Good idea with adding a 2nd router. Forgive the ignorance, but do the two routers need to be the same brand/model number ect...?

I have pretty basic model Linksys wireless N router. We have two laptops, Xbox, Ipod touch, Wii, and probably something else that uses internet that I'm forgetting. We did have a D-link wireless G router and it was just less reliable, weaker signal.

No it doesnt matter, as long as the 2 are different channels you can share the same wireless key!
