Help me I'm tech retarded
So yesterday I got an Xbox360 and a years membership to xbox live (all for free)
What I need to know is what options I have as far as getting an internet signal to my Xbox and my computer at the same time.
Right now I can hook my ethernet cable from the modem to my computer and have internet or to my Xbox and have Xbox-live but I want both
The facts
I don't have wireless internet
my Modem has a single ethernet port and a single port for a usb cable it looks like this
http://www.sdsaram.com/data/file/boa...it_u10c018.gif
this is the exact model
Please tell me my options oh tech inclined ones
I bow before your awesome might
edit:
For a while today I tried to find a downloadable driver so I could run the usb to my computer and the ethernet cable to the xbox but I failed at the finding the driver part

Ok if you buy wireles router then on the back you should have four other ports to plug inot and you can still plug directly from that to your xbox and CPU.... i have a belkin that was like 60 bucks and my 360 goes directly into that but my cpu and laptop are wireless.... it has 4 ports to directly plug into so you would be ably to have both plugged in at the same time.

Well. Your modem is assigned one ip address. And no two same devices can share that IP address on the network or they will have problems, and wont work.
What you need to do is buy a wired or wireless router whichever you would like best. BUT seeings how everything is close together, you could get a wired router and satisfy your needs.
It only comes with one cat5e cable, so you can get someone to make on or just get however long of one you need at walmart/bestbuy whichever place u get your router from.
After you install and set up the router you can connect both devices through the router. And the router will create a Virtual Private Network or VPN for short. What it will do is take your IP address thats assigned by your internet service provider, and use it as its connection. Then it will start IP's at 192.168.1.1 which will be its address, and its DHCP client will assign from 192.168.1.100 up to devices connected to it so they dont have the same IP.
The USB port on your modem is not to be used for internet connectivity. It's simply a port thats used to upload and update its instructions, IE to configure IP, subnet mask, PPPOE settings and all that.. Don't ever go into there or you will screw your internet up until they send someone out to reconfigure its settings.
Bottom line buy a router. I recommend Linksys, Belkin, and Netgear. They all come with CD's now so they can be set up by anybody just follow all instructions.
If you take the wireless route, the XBOX has to have a 100 dollar wireless card, and its too much money, and wired connections are much faster and have almost 0ms latency lagg.
Also note when you have your XBOX and PC connected to your router, you will experience "LAGG" on your live games if someones using the internet while you play. You may not notice it, but i'm a hardcore PC gamer and Latency means the difference between playability and not.
Hope this helps!

Well it also will depend on the speed of your conection. I have my laptop on and my xbox and dont have any lagg. Also my xbox is hard wired so that might be why. it goes directly to the back of my wireless modem so no need for a wireless for the xbox.

I'm surprised Krenogin didn't tell you to run a wire from your neighbor's cable box to your XBox, then put the other end of the wire into an electrical outlet, and then put another wire from that same outlet to your XBox and that will fix everything.

Dunno if this is said above, but DO NOT GET A WIRELESS router. Ive spent so much ******* time and money with wireless **** i had enough and bought this kit that allows me to turn any electrical outlet in my house, into a ethernet port. Very good kit, although its the price of the average router, has worked flawlessly with me. Just my .02 dont even try to **** with wireless, go wired, or not.

Since they are close you just need to split them with a spliter and be done with it for cheap. keep it all wired and it will be fast and good.
Something like this will do you just fine.

Don't get D-link.
Just leave that at that.
I've never had a problem with wireless, and in all reality its better to get a wireless router just to have it. Go with an N-router if you do though, G-wireless sucks (horrible range, horrible speed).
The issue with not getting a wireless router is that phones, game consoles, and computers are all eventually going to be wireless only so why not just go ahead and get it now.
Look at the Wii, it doesn't even come with an ethernet port out of the box, and most smart phones can use the wi-fi in your house instead of the data plan to save you money.
I say get a Linksys wireless router and call it a day. I have a Netgear and it has issues with Xbox Live so stick to Linksys if you can. Don't get D-link or any of those off brands, usually they're junk and are pains to use.

If you get a wireless router, you don't need the wireless adapter for xbox like Krenogin said. You can still plug the xbox directly into the router. Now if you are going to be playing in another room, then yes, the wireless adapter is needed. Just take $40-50 and buy a wireless router. You never know when you get a laptop or something and you'll want that wireless capability.

Theres two types of routers, wired and wireless.. Both are the same except one has wireless and it has antennas sticking out of the back of it. They have 5 ports on the back, 1 for uplink from the modem and 4 for other devices.
If you get a wireless router, if you dont use wireless u can disable it in its settings.
Bottom line a wireless routers not much more expensive than a wired router, and its future proofing as well.
And blackstang, i told him hed have to get a wireless adaptor for his xbox if they werent in the same room and far away. read my posts better.

If you have a good connection, you won't really experience any lag. I've been downloading a movie while playing on xbox live before and have had no problems.
