WTF...Chip Foose?
Watching the show Overhaulin', and just saw the crew, by Chip Foose's direction no doubt...CUT the springs to lower the car they were doing. (a 1970 Mustang)
yeah, real professional there Chip. He just lost quite a few points from me. |

I don't like hardly anything of Chip Foose's. It's all the same. Big-ass ugly wheels, two tone paint, and everything is just generally ugly and overdone. Some of his wheels are all right, but I've seen better. I would not let him anywhere near Spooky.
|
I've seen cars from Chip that were overdone, and ones that were just right. I dont like his wheels..but he is a talented artist and designer. But now that he's into cutting springs to lower a car...
yeah, sorry chip-o... but... FAIL. |
Well i guess you gotta expect it when they put a car together in what 7 or 8 days? They probably have ass a decent amount of stuff

ummm...no. When 20 or so ppl that all apparently know how to build cars are there... restoring a car like that in 7 days (so they say) is possible and no excuse for cutting springs, and I would never expect it, and no one else should either. Foose designed cars sell for what...$50k and up? A lot. I wouldnt cut the springs on any car to lower it. That's just bullshit cheap fail. |

If they have 7 days they can rush order the right springs
fail |
I wonder if they do this every time they lower a car, i know they always mention chip liking the car "sitting" on the ground. Maybe they just did it this once, maybe they always do it. who knows.

I'm not sure about the older Mustangs, but for the SN's the springs aren't progressive rate so while it may not be the "right" way to do it, it's not necessarily "wrong" either...
I would never cut more than a half-coil or the "dead spring" ,but some people do more with no issues. |
meh... cutting springs is wrong, its never right. Right is buy a spring for your application. Wrong would be any other way someone would want to do it.
some ppl do more (damage) with no issues that they notice or report |

some ppl do more (damage) with no issues that they notice or report I agree that cutting several coils would be beyond stupid, but half a coil or a single coil is pretty common in and out of the Mustang world. The ones that make me laugh are the Honduh boys who cut their springs to oblivion and basically just ride on their collapsed shocks. |
well if you all think cutting springs are bad...
Around here i've seen people lower their cars by heating the springs then loading them down with bags of feed till it drops to where they like it. I never got to ride in the car with them after SO i cant tell you how horrible it rides/handles,, all i know is that they said almost every curve the ass end wants to slide out. |

Yeah heating a coil causes oxidation or speeds up the rate of oxidation greatly. Then you end up with a rusted spring........... Not a good thing
|
I'll agree that cutting isn't the best option but it isn't horrible or should never be done. Cutting a dead coil isn't going to do anything. Heating a coil is re-ta-ded.
|
I think Chip does it just to get the car to sit the way he wants the car to. I guess thats how he makes he's car "custom". I don't think its that big of a deal but I'm not a big suspension guy either so I really wouldn't know.... I'd take a car he's designed any day though.

^^ +1

who the hell cares if he cut the springs? he knows what he is doing. dont worry about it. because its Chip Foose, one of the worlds most famous custom car designers/builders. A Foose car is touted as and supposed to be a top of the line setup. And that would mean getting the right springs for the application instead of cutting an entire coil out that was not a "dead" coil. |
every time i see overhauling, they are still assembling the thing right up to the point where they are unveiling it. if he is going to cut a corner, i would rather it be with the springs than the engine, custom fabrication, audio system, or paintjob. In the end he is putting together a instant showcar with a big ass engine in it, not a track racer.
im sure that if he is designing his own car or a car for a client that he wouldnt cut the springs. i really dont see it as a big deal, in the grand scheme of things when you consider all the amazing shit he does to the car, if he cuts the springs well, who gives a shit. lol seriously if he came out and did all that work on your car for FREE, new engine, new interior, new paint, customer one-off fabrication, badass stereo, etc, are you REALLY going to bitch about the springs? lol i mean come on dude. its a tv show about him fixing peoples heaps of shit into showcars for FREE. |
My Cobras springs were cut by the guy I bought it from and it rode nice and I loved the stance. If you know what your doing it can be done.

I find it hard to believe that Chip Foose had trouble getting the right springs... I bet he has H&R and Eibach on his cell phone speed dial and also that a rep from either company would deliver same hour to him, whatever spring he needed.
Fact Remains: A top notch PROFESSIONAL car bulder/designer should not be cutting springs to lower a car. |

I'd still let him build my car, and I havent heard anything bad from his builds. He knows more than I do about building cars, and he is building one for me for free, Chop away my friend.
