Post your favorite calibers for the following and discuss:

Dangerous Game (grizzly bear, cougar, wild boar)

I like:
.444 marlin, 7mm rem-mag, 338 win-mag

.223, 22-250, .270, 6.5x55 swede, .22 mag(rimfire)
.22lr, .22mag, .223, .22-250, .25-06
20ga, 16ga, 12ga.

My dangerous game rounds are big enough to make humane kills on anything from dik-dik to dinosaurs but they are zero fun to shoot.
My Large game rounds need to be able to penetrate clean through and leave a good blood leak but have enough power in the hit that blood trailing s not normally needed.
Medium game rounds need to be hot enough to kill it dead right there but not destroy the pelt. Skinny bullets that are heavy for calibre moving nasty fast work great.
Small game is all about the range of the shots... use enough to get the bullet there.
I prefer smaller shotgun rounds to big ones. 16ga is about perfect but more often I'll use a 20ga since pretty much all the available ammo for it is high base hunting stuff and it's fairly cheap. 16ga is kinda spendy. 12ga is fine but lacks a challenge aspect.

i'm partial to .30-06. i don't usually hunt at all, but if i was, i would use .30-06 for large game, and .223 for smaller.

I've got some 25mm cannon rounds from a Bradley tank in my room, what can I kill with that?

I haven't done any hunting but I really like my Remington 7mm mag. In the future I want to pick up a nice bolt action .22 and a S&W 500 revolver.

All of the above. And i use 20ga for hunting dove or quail, and a 7mm mag for deer/larger game. .22s are just fuck fuck pea shooters that are fun to waste ammo :P

People seem to think that the .500 S&W is a fun gun but lemme warn you, it is a full on real deal wrist breaker. I have a .475 linebaugh and a .500 linebaugh and a few .44's. I used the 44's to train for the 475 and the 475 to train for the 500. The 500 hurt my wrist almost as bad as it hurt my palm. The 500 S&W kicks harder than either by a substantial amount due to the poor grip design of double action revolvers. Be prepared to spend 80 bucks a box for ammo too.

too bad that's a pic of what looks like a 10mm colt delta elite with a bushmaster AR15 in the background (normally chambered in .223).

question is... why is it surrounded by 10mm auto brass. Those ain't .45's. You can tell by the large pistol primer on the rebated rim brass and the bright spots on the poorly supported section of the case wall by the case web.

They made a KCII chambered in 10mm.

I know... I was picking on fishy for saying .45 and showing 10mm. Bad fish.

Someone has me rethinking the 500 :confused: I am looking for a revolver that I can take backpacking, camping and fishing for a defense gun. Any suggestions?

I'm not a hunter, or even a big shooter at all...but I enjoy an s&w .44 every now and then and basically any 9mm Glock will put a smile on my face.

For deer, I normally car my Mini-14 .223, I'll post my bullet specs later - It's been a couple years since I reloaded, Still using the 50 bullets I made in my last batch.
If i'm not carrying that, I'm carrying my .30-06, which is a pretty incredibly powerful gun. I carry that gun and my .357 revolver when I'm hunting deer too, just because I'm way too nervous about hogs lol. I've been in a truck going down a pasture, and we pissed one off and ended up getting rammed by one of those damn things, scary shit...


.22 LR for small game, just your average ruger. I also have a 20 gauge, and I aslo have a pump action winchester .22 rifle, can't remember what it is, but I know it's relatively rare...

My grandfather has an m1 garand and a BAR, I've seen them but never shot them.

I do recognize the need for un-fun guns for such purposes but there is a middle ground that'll still do the job without so much cost, ammo scarcity, or pain.

Taurus Tracker in .44mag. It's a 5 shot revolver with adjustable sights and a 4" barrel. It's a pretty light gun so recoil is stout but NOTHING like a 454/460/480/500. With regular ol' 240gr hollow point rounds at 1300fps or thereabouts you're talking about 31" of penetration and nearly a ton of kinetic energy.

Beyond that 1 specific gun, any ol' revolver in .44 mag is better in a realistic situation. You can shoot even the stoutest .44mag loads without fear of the recoil but if you're not ready for the big boys when you touch them off (like the 500) you'll go home alive but with a 2 piece wrist.

Other 44's I really like are the Ruger Super Redhawk, Ruger Super Blackhawk, S&W M629, S&W M29. No semi-autos.

Having been shot by one and gotten really pissed off about it, enough to whip the shooters ass before seeking treatment, I can say with authority that this is a bad idea.

Try pig hunting with that .44. You'll really have a bunch of fun and it's a helluva pig gun.

We're not allowed to use .22 cal centerfire for deer here or I'd probably use the 22-250 since our deer are really small out here. Blacktails are about 1/2-1/3 the size of a whitetail or mule deer.

Do you have a Tracker? I like the Tacker series but I have had concerns of Taurus' materials and craftmanship. I personally have had problems on my PT111 but I have no experience with their revolvers.

Damn you got shot by a .38? That must have hurt like hell.

I've had two of them. At one point they were sold to finance another gun that was missing in my collection. Filled the slot nicely with a stainless S&W .41mag with an unfluted cylinder. fit right between the matching .357 and .44 in what I think of as one of their best looking series ever. The .44 is new but it was a great gun in the only slightly less powerful 41mag. It was a handful but not truly unpleasant to shoot. With light loads it could even be called fun. With the .44mag you can stuff .44 specials in it too.

Taurus makes guns right up there in quality with S&W and Ruger. These are arms for a lifetime. Their frames are stunningly strong for their weight and they're very well put together. The integrated hammer lock device is great too. I'd call Taurus USA if your PT111 is not up to snuff. They really take quality seriously. If one slipped through they'll want to know.

EDIT: and yeah... it hurts but not as much as you'd think. Something like being hit with a ball peen hammer on a 4ft pole by Tiger Woods. I lucked out and only got half the bullet and it keyholed me and took a little hunk out but didn't penetrate deeply. I got hit with a .22 a couple years before that... hurt a lot more and fully penetrated my calf. That one took the better part of a year to heal. Both are interesting scars but the years have thankfully faded them a bit. Both times were accidents caused by stupid people doing stupid things trying to be funny. Neither case was the least bit funny.

The .50AE really isn't that great a cartridge and costs an enormous amount of money to feed. Penetration is sub-par for the level of recoil and it's only chambered in 1 gun whcih is a flyin' apart piece of shit. How is it any good...

Now the .50BMG, that's another story, $5 a bullet minimum and anything short of an elephant will be shredded. And, the 140lbs of free recoil is a little stout for most considering a typical deer rifle has closer to 15-20lbs. An African plains rifle in .338 win mag only spits out 35ish lbs of recoil and a dangerous game rifle like a .416Weatherby only kicks with 60lbs. I don't know 3 guys that can shoulder a .416 without having to worry about the pain. The gun that broke my shoulder rang the bell at 175lbs of recoil energy. Bigger isn't always better.
