California sucks

so...i get a paper in the mail today that states i owe the state of California $450 for the 2005 tax year. the thing is, i was never ever in california for 2005, let alone being a legal resident of cali to pay taxes. i tried calling the california tax board, but they said "were not taking phone calls". i am not paying that. i can't. so...what are my options? hiring a tax lawyer, and paying 450 anyway? or just contact my National Guard unit for options, or talk with the cali tax board directly?

california is broke, and is trying to screw anyone and everyone that set foot in california.

NewMustangMan 04-13-2009 01:27 PM

Screw cali lol. I say try and contact the Board directly first and then take the other options

stanger00 04-13-2009 01:41 PM

There are a lot of scams like that going around. I say talk to the Cali Tax board directly and see if it's real and go from there.

yeah, i was never a legal resident in 2005. i bought stuff from Newegg, but when i did it from california, i had to pay a sales tax online. why do they say i owe stuff from 2005 when i was never even there. let alone legal resident of that state? o.O

california -screwing everyone in california first, the nation next.

I'm still waiting on my state taxes, that were susposed to be here a month ago.

jjtgiants 04-13-2009 04:33 PM

There are a couple of things here you should consider.

1. It could be a mistake. There might be someone with the same name out there and some how they got you mixed up.

2. Check your credit reports to make sure everything is correct. Somehow my dads social security number was sold to someone illegal and this person was basically living a normal life, paying bills ect....but it was under my dads social security number. Anyway, make sure it's not a case of identity theft.

Also, write the Franchise Tax Board a letter explaining the issue, and include documents that prove you didn't live in Cali. When it comes to stuff like this you need to put shit in writing and recieve answers from them in writing. Phone conversations don't mean jack.
