Radar Detector

Alright so who's got one?

I recently got caught in a speed trap, I was going just as fast as the car in front of me and behind me but, I guess driving a nicer car can have its disadvantages because I got the ticket. A cop was standing on the bridge with a radar gun in hand while his buddies were on the on ramp ready to give the tickets. Usually I can always react quick enough to these situations and slow down, but since I didn't see a cop car I fell for this one. Oh and he got me for going 82 in a 70. I know for a fact I was only going maybe 75-77, I had cruise control on, but regardless I was still speeding so taking it to court wouldn't help.

Can you guys give some suggestions? I'm not looking to spend a fortune but I'd definitely rather not get another, here in Indiana they are cracking down everywhere to make some extra cash off of drivers.

Valentine One. best one out there basically...but its pretty expensive. They are made here in the town where I live.

I have a suggestion.....don't speed! LOL....sorry man, I couldn't resist being a smart ass.

Once again I have nothing to add.....just trying to get to 4,000 posts.

post whore! haha...its all good...you usually have pretty interesting things to say.

Astray 02-25-2009 04:47 PM

Yeah...... its one boring ride to Michigan what can I say? 5-10 miles over on the highway in good conditions isn't that dangerous... but I guess thats just my opinion.

SxyXc 02-25-2009 05:08 PM

i at one point saw this one really kick ass radar detector, that was actually made into your car, a front sensor, rear sensor, and a sensor on each side, and to tell you when there was a cop they added two LED's onto your dash... but that was like a grand for it.. so really expensive..

Astray 02-25-2009 05:28 PM

I saw something like that on Unique Whips, they put it into a Porsche Cheyenne(think thats how its spelled)

I'm not a big on watching the show but I happened to catch that episode, that's a little too fancy for me though.

Yeah those are so you can hide having your radar detector in a state where they're illegal.

I have installed those on quite a few Bimmers. They are quite the shizz.

Thank me whenever, actually thank the guy that gave me this link ... I forgot who. This is from the actual factory, just refirbished. They have a rebate program and thats where these come from. I bought one about a week ago and it works fine from what I can tell.

This is right below the V1, it retails new for about $300ish. If you want a slightly updated new one, you can get the 8500 x50 but only new and I think that one costs about $350 new.

Is it actually a good one that catches everything?

My father had one in my SUV (since he mainly drives it) and it went off constantly, almost at every right and every little stupid thing. It was a piece of **** that wasn't worth it. No I don't know how much he paid for it or anything, I'm just tired of him getting my SUV in trouble.

which brand was it? an escort? All radar detectors pick up false positives. You can turn off certain bands, if you know your local PD doenst use say X or K band.

Also no radar detector will be 100% all the time. Cops are starting to use instant on mode more and more, which by time they hit you its too late. Also the escort will detect laser, it will be too late when it goes off anyway. These are some of the things you have to realize when getting a detector.

The escort is well known for being really good for range. Meaning it detects the radar signal pretty far out in some cases.

The most annoying this is false positives though.

Quite insightful and very true.. What's the easiest way not to get a ticket? Don't speed! Genius! lol

I've had an old Cobra 12 band radar/lazer detector for like 5 years now, I keep it in my car basically just to keep me on my toes, it keeps me from speeding rather than avoiding tickets.

Either way, detectors are almost useless today. If your town uses lazer detection they'll have your speed before you know they are there and radar is similar. BUT.. Radar is easier to detect ahead of time because it emitts(sp?) a larger band and doesn't always focus on your car alone.

If a cop gets you in a lazer sight and you're speeding, consider yourself toast.

I have no clue, he lost it awhile ago and this was over a year ago. I was driving my SUV one day and I forgot it was on and it was just going off at everything, it was annoying. I think it was a cheap pieace of **** kind. Yeah you're right about being tricky, I seem to be very lucky, but I was thinking of using it for my dad to avoid cops as well. I have no clue what they use, I never been busted for speeding. Well I have recently, but he said he couldn't radar me or something, it was funny. He got mad that he couldn't get a signal on me and I don't even have a radar.

Does the one you have range all around the vechile? Also I saw a privacy thing on the Valentine website. Is that good or just a waste of money? I know NOTHING about radars.

Lets say I want one for my father because he doesn't have a liecense and he takes my SUV to and from work, sometimes to the bar as well. Could we use it to avoid cops because of him having a suspended liecense? Yeah mine are about to be as well, for a month, but it's not for me.

The V1 (Valentine1) is considered one of the, if not the, best radar detector out there. But you will PAY for it heh. Even the V1 though, is not the end all and be all. The same above still applies to it.

Privacy thing? If you are talking about that smaller module adapter, all that does is relocate the display to say your dash so others on the road cant see you have a radar detector.

It said something about others not being able to use the radar, haha. Yeah I'll make him pay half and I pay half. As long as he trieds to avoid the cop car when it goes off, because I hate my SUV being taken in since he doesn't have a license. What's the V1 mean? I think it means it's the number one? HAHA

Is the one you posted worth it? Do they tell you where the cop is coming from maybe?

I think your father shouldnt be driving on a suspended license. And on top of that why would he be speeding while driving with a suspended license? And why would you willingly let him use your SUV.

So full of fail.

Take the bus. Sorry dude, but driving without a license is stupid. If you get pulled over without it you might as well put the Mustang away for a year or so. Maybe even more if they impound the car.

Radar detectors don't really help you avoid cops, they just try to detect whether a signal is being shot at your car to see how fast it's going. The problem with this is the fact that so many different businesses use radar, Gas stations/Supermarkets/Grocery stores, the little sensors that tell the doors to open use a form of radar that most even sub-par radar detectors will pick up and go off. Some trucks use some type or radar to bypass weigh-stations, I don't know how they look on your highways, but around here there are sensors in the far right lane near weight stations that read a trucks signal and how long it's been since it's been weighed. All of these simple things will have the radar going nuts.

Honestly, the easiest way not to get pulled over is to just obey the law.

zigzagg321 02-25-2009 07:17 PM

Ok a radar detector isnt going to go off when there is a cop around, the cop has to be actively using his radar/laser gun for a detector to detect a police officer.

It's his and mine, I can't really just tell him no. :/ He doesn't speed, but I thought if him having a radar he can avoid the cop being near him.

I do obey the law, I only go maybe 5 MPH over the limit, which is the lay here in Oregon. I am going to take the bus when my liecense gets suspended, I'm not going to go through the bull**** to get it back.

I would actually really love to get a V1, but I just bought this escort and it serves me well enough. I was able to detect a cop about 800m away before I could even see him. I think he had his radar on while driving. I assume he had a system that can detect speeds while driving.

Actually not even close, we just have the same attitudes, but I can control my anger unlike him. He hasn't had a license in years and he doesn't take care of his vechiles like he used to. What happened is he got my car taken away long time ago. It was my High School present from my mother (before she died) and my father. He decided to use it for awhile, got it taken away and never got it back. Lied to me for years about it and then I finally found out. So he went and bought a SUV, half mine and half his.

98 Atlantic Blue V6 02-25-2009 07:31 PM

i have a 12 band cobra with 360 degree lazer and it works great when the cops dont out smart it buy just fliping on the radar when they are right in front of you but for roads with lots of traffic if does pick up the cops clocking other cars usually long before they clock you, also works well for the bright cops that drive around with their radar on lol , it does get annoying in town when automatic doors and security system set it off but after driving with it for a while you get a feel for false alarms and actual alerts. I got mine at best buy for $100 2 years ago

zigzagg321 02-25-2009 08:11 PM

bold FTL.

Astray 02-25-2009 08:15 PM

So I'm hearing two different opinions of them, some say they help, others say useless. Am I understanding correctly that with the laser detectors they only pick up the signal when its too late or is this incorrect?
