I just filed paperwork and got fingerprints taken to obtain a firearm permit and handgun etc.

Does anyone on here own handguns? or can anyone recommend some websites for additional information. Just from my own research and personal preference i think im going to try and get a Glock 17 9mm. I dont really have a set budget but i def do not want to spend over 1G. I've also looked at the beretta 9mm's.

I am new to all of this so go easy on me.

Okay, the glock is one of the most reliable hand guns ever made.

Berettas are shit, the only reason why the military uses them is because they are the cheapest sidearms available that fit the requirements.

Metal isn't better than plastic once you look at how many firearms manufacturers are switching to composite materials because they are more durable and much lighter.

yeah a 92FS Beretta is cheap...lol. Go shoot your Ruger semi-auto pistol and tell me a 92FS is a cheap gun.

oh and the military requirements are that it can shoot more bullets before failing than any other pistol tested. Guess thats a cheap attribute too huh.

The ruger isn't mine. It's my dad's. And yeah it's a cheap $380 pistol that I wouldn't trust my life with, I told him to buy a glock but he is a cheap person, what can I say.

Try to put your beretta through any of this and see how long it lasts.

I carry a SigSaur P220 45. at work. They are decent guns. The department I was at before, we carried Glock Model 21 40 cal. Just by handling these 2 guns...... Glock > Sig

don't hate on Ruger, the SR9 is a great gun. low cost, high magazine capacity, ability to be upgraded and has adjustable sights....

it may not be as cool a Glock, or a Sig. however, if you are looking for a reliable sidearm, at a decent price it deserves a look.

Glock is the best... it's also for professionals. You get one when you know better.

Beretta is a great gun for the poorly trained. Inexpensive, reliable, external safety.

revolver is for guys that make each shot count. If someone pulls a wheel-gun on you you'd better know your escape route.

If you're going to carry do yourself a favor and get properly trained. Call up Front Sight (www.frontsight.com) and tell them one of their life members recommended you. You'll never be as good as you need (not possible to be that perfect) to be but you can get very well trained there and be as good as you can under the circumstances. Front Sight is the only place I'd bother training (and have).

Find what feels good to you. You'll never shoot right if you're feeling like there's a brick in your hand. Also, if you're going for a CCW then you may want to consider the mid-size frames like the glock 19 or the Beretta centurion.

a hill billy with a Glock is no match for a properly trained proffesional carrying a Charter Arms patriot.....and while we would all love to have one....fact is most people will never need/ or be able to tell the difference ...

I would rather have someone buy an SR9, use the money saved for some training and be able to put rounds down range.....than blow the wad on a Glock and not be able to use it correctly.

If you are in a situation where you actually need to use your gun a revolver is the best choice. You don't have to take off a safety and you don't have to do anything else to get it ready for action semi autos can jam but a revolver will almost never even if you hit a dud you just pull the trigger and it goes away. Not to mention a .44 mag to the chest can stop a bear lets see a glock a berreta or a sig do that

I dont get where ppl think Beretta is a cheapo gun. a $650 handgun is not cheap...its not expensive in the realm of handguns...but it's not cheap. Most Glocks dont cost much more that a 92FS Beretta anyhow.

I've had mine for about 10 years, never even a hint of a problem with it.

Glock's trigger safety is fucking annoying. I just dont like them at all.

Beretta's safety is good enough for me...hell it rotates the firing pin 90degrees so the gun cannot fire with the safety on.

If you do carry a gun a knife is a must as well because you never know when you will need it and there is nothing as usefull as a good boot knife

I always carry a knife with me. Side hip little holster to hold it. along with my mini maglight and my cellphone. And I hope I never have to use it, but I swear to God if some lowlife tries to rob me or anyone I'm with, escpecially any of my family members, I am not gonna give up my hard earned money, even if it may only be 20 bucks. I will cut the fuck out of someone and hope I don't get shot or charged with murder.

I'm thinking about getting a concealed weapons license, but there a lot of if's about carrying a gun. I don't want to get shot by a over zealious cop and I don't want to accidently shoot someone who happens to be in the line of fire. But I think I may be able to make a quick stab to a vital organ in about the same time you can pull a gun.

This is probably the very worst attitude to have when being approached by a thief but if I can say I'm reaching for my wallet and get my knife out fast enough, I'm gonna slice or stab, then
let adrenaline do it's thing. And in the end if I live I will testify that I was protecting myself or I was scared for my life.. Any opinions on my bad attitude with this?? :o

this all sounds nice....but very few people actually have the balls to take another mans life, especially at the range you need to be for a knife to be effective.

actually my dad has one because he has small hands, and the handle for the glock was to big for him to get a comfortable grip on the gun, while the makarov is small, he can hold it comfortable...

My room-mate enjoys the walther p99 for a sidearm, and I believe the PPS is the ccw version of it, any opinions on that? For myself, I have always fancied the carry versions of the good ole 1911. (most likely kimber)

It would depend on what you are using the handgun for....

If you are going for concealed carry I definitely would not recommend a full size handgun. Maybe something in the .380 caliber? I carry a Ruger LCP for concealed carry.

If it is for home defense I would recommend you just skip the handgun and get a shotgun instead.

But the Glock is a great gun, I carry the Beretta 92 on duty and I hate it.

my normal carry gun is either my glock g21c or my custom springfield 1911. Those are big pistols and they take a good bit of training and skill to employ smoothly under stress. I'm better trained than all but the most experienced operators and I still would rather carry a my little old S&W 66 because it's easier to operate. Fortunately I don't mind the extra weight enough to not go ahead and pack 1 from column A and 1 from column B.

.380 is insufficient IMO. If you're going to go full caliber, might as well pony up to the bar and go full power too. A .380 is nothing but a 9mm short (and weak). I don't advocate .45's for most people but a 9mm is not too much to handle if you're set on an auto pistol.

Afterhours... a hillbilly with a glock will certainly have a good shot at murdering the pro with a micro-revolver. Simple enough... the Charter guns cease to have a good shot at being even marginally lethal outside of 10-15 yards. A hillbilly with a glock would never let you get that close to the still... He'd have put down the glock for a second and killed your ass with his deer rifle. Don't make retarded fuckin comparisons... they're liable to start idiotic back and forth's that we both don't want to read. At least use something classy like "Any gun will do if I will do!"

Anybody that's ever been in a knife fight go ahead and raise your remaining hand. Yeah... thought so. You will definitely get cut regardless of which side of the knife you're on initially. That's how it ends up working when you try to kill someone up close and personal like that.

Hell I would never want to be in a knife fight I don't carry one for the purpose of using it in a fight they a are just so damned useful in almost any situation I never leave home without it. You never know when you are going to come up to a car wreck with somebody stuck in a seatbelt or it could be you thats stuck. A knife is only a weapon if you have the element of surprise or it's your only option even then I'd rather throw punches or even better get the hell outa dodge but a knife can save your life or someone elses in more ways than one.
