As most of you know, I am an EMT, have been for about 3 years, got my cert in the Army.... Well, whenever I see an accident, I ALWAYS pull over.
Well, tonight I'm driving home on Maricopa Road, and about 3/4 mile away from the Maricopa Billboard (only those who know Maricopa know the billboard lol) there was cops, and a Honda SUV on it's roof. I pull over and do my patient assesment. Well, when the MEdics show up in the meat wagons, I tried telling them the assesment, but they pretty much told me to piss off. Now, I could understand it if I wasn't an EMT, but, for a fellow proffesional to tell me to piss of makes me VERY angry... The professional courtesy was not there at all. It seems like, since they are on the clock, they think they are better then me. And this has happened on more then one occation.... Now, don't get the wrong impression here.... I DO NOT STOP BECAUSE I WANT TO BE THANKED OR FOR THE KARMA, OR FOR ANYTHING ELSE FOR THAT MATTER.... I stop because I enjoy helping people in need.... as to why I became a Combat Medic... It just pisses me off that those guys think I know LESS then they do because I don't wear a uniform..... |

Did you identify yourself as an EMT? I know its rude but you have to see the situation in their shoes. Someones lifes in danger and if something happened, it would be THEIR ass because they are on duty and on the scene.
As for the "Piss-Off" statement, you should of socked him in the face and then help him with any medical issues he has. :laughing8 |

Yea, I wouldnt have said piss off, but Id have still checked the patient myself as well just to cover my ace...I dont need a lawsuit because I listened to someone when I could have just checked it, but yes, it is rude to act like you are better because you have a uniform on. Just lame. I have a friend whose a emt, he loves it too.

Dont get mad, as when customers or another fellow tech tells me they have checked something, I always recheck as you want to make sure so you can cover your butt and sometimes I find something that they didnt.

I'm not angry cause they rechecked, that's fine, that's normal.... I'm just angry that they had NO proffesional courtesy...
And yes, when they showed up, they asked me whom I was, I said I am an EMT, and stopped when I saw the accident... Trust me, I KNOW how stressfull being an EMT can be |

Character is defined as what a person does when nobody is around to see. You, Garth, are a person of high character. Let it slide.....

You did what you were trained to do. Great job, you good have saved a life. Unfortunately our culture of finding reasons to sue someone for unrealistic amounts of money may make other EMT's worried about not doing anything "not by the book". They may not have believed you were truly a EMT yourself. But they may have also wanted to be the one in charge of the situation, After you had already established what needed to be done. Ego was probably involved. Anyway keep doing what you do. You are helping people in tragic situations. That has to mean something to you. :icon_salu

I'll never forget the first accident I ever stopped at... It was a "Winter Dance" my freshman year of high school... on the way to take my date home (Jenny) (And my momma was driving, cause we were 14 lol), but we stopped at an accident that happened infront of us... A drunk driver ran a red light, and hit a car with 5 People, including a 4 month old baby whom was unrestrained. Well, somehow, the baby was "wedged" inbetween the front and rear seats. The front seat wouldn't move, and they couldn't get the baby out. I have collect Knives nearly all my life, and had a utility knife in my momma's car, as I always have one with me, and ran and got it.... I managed to get the baby out, but he was not breathing, not even 1 minute after the baby was out of the car, the EMT's showed up, and performed CPR and the baby was responsive yet once again... The EMT's said if they woulda had to get the baby free, he would have died... The feeling I got, even though I wasn't the one who revived the child, was unbelieveable... and I was hooked.... that's why I chose the profession I did.... but I don't look for a thank you or anything. I do it to help people.... Also, EMT vs. Paramedic.... A Paramedic is a level of EMT.... 3 levels to being an EMT.... Basic, Intermediate, and Paramedic.... Paramedics and basics are the 2 MAIN levels.... basics have Basic life support skills, Paramedics have Advanced Life Support training and can push meds... Sorry for the long post, it's late and I'm bored as hell |
