Default Cell Phones....Yes or No

Cell phones? What is your thought of their use in cars? Multiple choices are fine.

I think this is a hot topic....there are some people who want to equate cell phone usage with being as dangerous and drunk driving because oa few studies that have been done, however, the fact is that the fatality rate has decreased even though cell phone usage has increased.

My personal feelings are that I don't see how you can single-out cell phones w/o targeting all types of distractions and besides, technology such as blue tooth and OnStar really reduce the risk to the point where using a phone is no different that a standard conversation.

Text messaging is a real problem because you have to take your hands and eyes off the road, but I am sure there is some blue tooth devices that can verbally text a message.

personally, I am scared to death when all girls talk on the phone and drive, and scared when some guys talk on the phone and drive. It seems like once they open their phone they go blind and forget they are even driving the car. But on the other hand I dont feel impaired at all when I'm on the phone while driving, and I don't care if someone else is on the phone while driving as long as they got their **** together. I text while driving to but i do it by touch, I dont even look at the phone a lot of the time my texts make no sense thanks to T9 lol

So since I would prefer a stereotypical type of person ban I guess I cannot vote lol

I voted for total ban and pentaltys.

10 years ago, people managed to drive and not always have to have a hand up to their ear yapping away on a cell phone. Just yesterday I passed someone on the highway and it was a woman with a coffee cup in one hand and a cell phone in the other. She must have been steering with her knees because she had one hand up to her ear the entire time and the other hand just holding the mug up while she took a drink every few seconds.

Half the time when I'm driving down the highway and theres a slow person that everyone has to go around, its someone talking on the cell phone. People with cell phones don't use their blinkers and are terrible drivers as it is. The majority are horrible drivers and I feel bad for the people who don't do it regularly, but I want a 100% ban on it.

I dislike using a phone while driving. My neighbor totaled her car becuase she was texting while driving, my roomate's highschool classmate was killed in a wreck texting while driving, and you head about it on the news every now and then about drivers being distracted while driving and being in a collision. I wouldn't be so much against a hands-free device. It's hard to hold a conversation with me while I drive becuase I concentrate so hard on the road and whats going on around me.

There was a study where they had people drive a simulator and some people were on the phone, some on bluetooth headsets, some drunk, and some none of the above. The people talking on the phone and headsets constantly rear ended the driver ahead of them cause they weren't paying attention. Headsets don't solve anything because the people are so focused on their conversations. I'm sorry but if you're driving to work, I'm sure you can wait to tell your friend what you did last night until you get to work.

I can always tell when someone is talking on the phone cause they cut you off and don't even bother signaling or looking in their mirror.

i agree with waterdr in that before you make yourself look silly by calling people who text retards...consider all the people using gps while driving...consider all the people watching movies or even listening to movies while they drive...how about driving with kids in the back seat? should that be outlawed too? me and my brothers fighting in the back of the van on the way to disney had to be more than a lil distracting for my mom...stay within your abilities i say...only you know what you can handle or how distracting something is to you

I actually never use my cell phone when I'm driving unless I get a phone call but even so I make it short and to the point and then hang up... but some of these people I mean damn I think sometimes they just call someone when they get in the car for no reason just out of habit. Some people that I know its just ridiculous and I hate being in the car when there driving because they are distracted no question about it. It's a battle that can't be won. I mean you can't "ban" cell phones in cars, I mean come on think of how impossible that is to do. I'm fine with penalties because the people that **** me off the most is when your at a stop light and you see a car coming to fast behind you and the ****er is on the phone and rearends you.

I'm in the middle. I think it depends on where you are at, and how long the conversation is. If you're driving around, having a 20-30 min conversation with someone, then you should consider pulling over. And also, I think if you're in some heavy traffic it shouldn't even cross your mind to pick up the phone. Those are impossible to impose laws on... so I just think people need to become more responsible about when and where. Kind of like drinking.

I know this won't suprise any of you, but I think starting July 1 it will be illegal to talk on your cell phone without a hands free device while driving here in Cali.

Other states will follow I'm assuming.....Cali or NY usually starts the domino

Theres no way that law would be able to be enforced. First of all it would be almost impossible to monitor or prove that someone was on the cell phone unless your stopped right next to them at a stop light. It's just like tint laws. Do a lot of people have illegal tint - yes, do they typically get pulled over and ticketed -no.

Cops will enforce it like the seat belt law.....they see you without a seat belt they will give you a ticket. It's a pretty simple concept actually....just like speeding, if there isn't a cop around you won't get a ticket, but if there is you'll get one.

Are you suggesting people should be monitored 24/7 in order to enforce everything on the books?

No my point was that things that are not monitored to enforce are rarely ticketed. Normally you can drive by a cop without a seatbelt on and not get pulled over. The second you pass a cop they don't go out of there way to be like oh man I hope hes wearing a seatbelt. I personally just don't see how a cell phone ban could possibly be enforced without over using resources. People now a days have grown up using cell phones just as people now a days have grown up wearing seat belts. You can't come in to this technological society and expect to ban something as people view as a need.

I'm not saying people need to be monitored 24/7. It's just my opinion that it will be almost impossible to enforce and I would much rather have police officers going after things that actually matter. I don't want all the police being occupied with writing tickets for a stupid cell phone violation.

EDIT: and i also think the headsets are just as distracting for people (because there still not focused on the road) and now that cars are making these things built in (Ex: microsoft sync or whatever its called in Ford cars).

I agree. Wearing a headset all the time will put you towards the top of my list of most hated people. It's not too bad around here, but in return, you get people who think they matter and wear them constantly but never see them talking.

OMG! Someone mark this on the calender.....Street Racer and I agree with something!

Cell phones are obviously dangerous, but so are many other things. Banning all cell phones in cars is just plain impossible. I am not sure if we can even ban txt messaging anymore then we can ban eating.....or giving your wife a kiss.

Fact is, in areas where they have banned phones, they see no decrease in accidents.

Probably because nowadays people are better at multitasking.

honestly though, if im in my car and you call, i probably wont pick up. I hate talking on the phone. My conversations are normally over in 30 seconds flat.

Well I just had to add this I just got ******* hit (rear ended) so now my bumper is dented so now it looks like I'll be getting that GT rear bumper I wanted lol. I believe it looked like she was on her cell phone (what a suprise) Other damage was the drivers side brake light was shattered other than that not much. Very low speed it was in a 25mph zone so from the looks of it I just need a rear bumper and a drivers side brake light. Going in tomorrow to get it checked out and hope for the best. Since it seems very minor right now I'm not filling it through insurance since the other lady didn't want to if we didn't have to. I would rather just pay for the parts and replace them than have my rates go up. So all in all I'm pissed but I'm very happy it was minor damage

if she rear ended you it's her fault, which is why she doesn't want to report it. you should tell your insurance company anyway

See I'm not sure legally it may have been my fault. This was actually the first time I've been hit and I've never hit anyone else. I was at a stop sign wanting to turn right onto a road and there was a truck next to me wanting to turn left. I know I should have just waited but I was inching out and didn't see a car and then after I was just about finishing my turn (i got clipped on the rear drivers side part of the rear bumper) is when I got hit. Since she was going a slow speed I know that if she was paying attention she could have hit the brake or at least avoided me since she had to have seen my car before I saw her. So I'm not sure technically I think it was my fault for turning into the intersection. Also I'm in a different state right now and Michigan has something called no fault so no one is liable for an accident up here which is what I understood from the Allstate agent up here. So the lady said if I want to do anything I have to notify my agent in IL I don't know it got confusing and as I said it's my first accident. So I just hope that when I go in to get an estimate on the damage it will only be what I think it is right now which is just the bumper and the brake light. At least I'm keeping my fingers crossed that thats all.
