Bent axle? Bent rim? I hope not...

Well you guys know I put my 17x9 and 17x10.5 bullitts on last week. I know I need an alignment but im having a bumpsteer kit put on too so im holding off on my alignment because its not bad. Well im coming home from milwaukee on the interstate and the tires are being loud. eh whatever, its drag radials and goodyears.... what do you expect. Well I get back into town with stop and go and its pretty loud. abnormally loud. I head up to work at 10pm (closed) but I can drive up and down and listen for sounds without cars bothering me. I open my door and drive and I hear a grinding noise and I can visually see my wheel wobbling.

ah ****, I think I bent an axle. i take it 2 mins down the road and wait till tomarrow. I come back to work and its still grinding but I can at least look at it. before I racked it up I went over for a visual inspection. 3 of 5 lugnuts could be turned by hand. wtf, these backed out or I didnt hammer down on them enough. I had some others sort of loose on each wheel too. flying down the interstate and loosing a wheel would of put me into the median. im glad im here to tell this story instead of someone else.

lol... everytime i take my wheels off and put em back on ill drive it around the block and recheck the lugs. Then next day ill go to work, get out, check the lugs. then check em again when i get home.

ive had these fuggin lugs loosen up on me before after swapping the wheels out.

Ive got the steeda locking lugs. never had a problem with em before... infact they were always on too tight. lol

glad you didn't wreck.

I TQ my lugs to 100ft/lbs. once a week I check them and tq again if necessary. Is it possible you were so excited to get them on that you forgot to tighten them?

are you thinking your axle is bent because of the loose rim/lugs? I would think as long as the rim stayed on the hub and didn't totally flop off, your axles should be fine.

Yeah, the impact gun wasnt enough.
:poke:

I know I tightened em all. But like I said, I really didnt hammer down on em like I should of. Some must of came loose.

I've had so many lugs back off I've just gotten in the habit of using the torque wrench. 100lbs and check every weekend. My stock wheels didn't have the problem but these 17x9 R's are all the time loosening.

Yup..... I wound up missing a lug nut a couple weeks ago, glad it was only one. I know damn good and well I put the muscle to em when I put em on. I was wondering how it backed off.... now I know..... these lugs dont do well with aftermarket wheels!

Glad you was able to tell the story bro! That means your OK and I found out to start checking my lugs more often!

mustangvsix 08-05-2007 07:43 PM

good to know. I have never had one of my back off or get loose yet, but i think i will check'em out tomarrow for sure.

This would solve the problem of lugs backing off
