Cali guys, smog question

So..what headers are smog legal besides the stocks?

Was looking at MAC Longtubes then thought "hey...those might not be legal"

Also, we can't swap out our cats?

nightzx 06-28-2007 02:50 AM

i know longtubes arent street legal in cali. pretty much need to look at shorties and find some with the smog number or whatever on them. i would imagine all the shorties you could get would be smog legal. and about the cats im not sure about it. I know my buddy has a bassani catted X, magnaflow catback and jba shorties and he passed smog about a year ago.

r3dn3ck 06-28-2007 08:35 AM

JBA or FRPP shorties are all that I know for certain are CARB certified. You may as well give up on longtubes completely here. There's no hope unless you're one of the fortunate few that live in remote areas where they don't enforce SMOG Check II

stanger00 06-28-2007 08:55 AM

what ever has a CARB sticker is legal for smog. so if it doesnt have a CARB sticker dont buy it. well you could buy it but you have to remove it for smog. do what i did drive to different smog checks till they give you a smog check without question.

jjtgiants 06-28-2007 09:02 AM

Like r3dn3ck said...JBA and FRPP shorties are pretty much all that's legal in Cali....and swapping headers is not an easy thing to do when it's time to smog the car.

00blkstanggt 06-28-2007 10:06 AM

I will let you know in a month or two. I gotta get smogged and I have long tubes. I did however find someone who said they will pass me. Just have to pay more.

SnTBakosFinest 06-28-2007 09:03 PM

And that cats is a no go right? =( Damnit...

Think I can pass smog with a divorced exhaust system? I beleive my cats are still origional...

PColav6 06-28-2007 10:18 PM

California and it's tight-ass smog restrictions, ha ha ha! :salook: :kekekegay:

SnTBakosFinest 06-28-2007 10:37 PM

Yes Cola, that is one thing I hate very much lol.

Before y'all get too excited, let me throw a bucket of cold water on the mid-pipe party:

It is unlawful to remove or replace any functional catalytic converter.

That is the law. Burn.T

After your cat stops working, then you can replace it but IIRC there's some sort of documentation that has to be obtained. Kinda weird. In any case, very few independent smog shops can't be coerced with a 12-er of Sam Adams or a phat meaty spliff and a hundred bucks to overlook your hardware situation as long as there's no codes being thrown and your rear O2's are functional and you can otherwise pass the sniffer.

stanger00 06-29-2007 08:25 AM

i was stayin in a pretty chitty neighborhood so it was easy finding a smog place that didnt care about my mods. yes i was turned away by about 3 shops but i eventually found one.

I'm just waiting for the day that other states start becoming as strict as us. Then lets see who will be laughing, but you have a pretty much stock V6 anyways :kekekegay: Nothing against you cheddarbob.

Anyways, I plan on throwing the stock midpipe back on and then hopefully passing with the long tubes. I do not want to have to take those off.

Found a guy on another forum who said to take it to his shop and he can pass me. It will cost me though. I will let you know in a month or two if it really works.

Nice dude! Are you interested in a mac prochamber with cats? ha ha....I've started to put my car back to stock and all I have left is the prochamber and shifter.

I would consider the prochamber, but I don't think it would fit since I have long tubes. It would have to be modified. Are you keeping the catback on there?

r3dn3ck 06-29-2007 09:54 AM

why you doin that jjt?

00blk... it can be easily modified... would sound beefy...

Yeah, I'm keeping the catback on because I didn't keep the original. I was going to try to sell it for a pretty penny since mac doesn't make catted prochambers anymore, but if your interested let me know and I'll hook you up. I just need to get it off my car, and i'm not looking forward to doing that....might just pay someone to swap them.

r3dn3ck...I'm going to sell the stang. I got a couple of dirt bikes so I'll have toys to play with, but just want something that is easier on gas and a little more comfortable to sit in traffic in. ha ha ha. I will miss the car for sure and probably even regret it for a little bit, but one I have more money and a little more established I'll get another hot rod.

00blkstanggt 06-29-2007 10:21 AM

Yeah I may be interested in that prochamber. Just let me know a price and I'll see what I can do. Might not be right away though, so if you need to sell it quickly go for it. I'm waiting on a school reimbursement check from work that should be around $1000. Might have to buy some car goodies.

my shop says as long as it has the carb stickers then its fine.
And if you have a tuner cant you just turn of the egr and o2 sensors and your car wont throw a code?

SnTBakosFinest 06-30-2007 12:53 AM

From what I know, Diablosport predators won't pass smog with the tune in. You have to go through troubleshooting and then return the factory tune.

I'll search around tommorow about being able to pass smog. Go to a couple muffler shops, and a couple smog shops, find out what they say.

Cause if the cats are the thing thats going to kill me, I'll just keep my stock cats and have them welded on to a different exhaust. I don't see why I wouldn't be able to pass smog on that..If its because "hrhr you change your Y pipe to a divorced exhaust" I'll attempt to put up a fight. :(

And yes, Red is correct, you need documentation that says your cats are screwed up to be able to swap them out. I beleive the documentation comes from the DMVs inspection, its a crappy process, just like anything else involving the DMV.

Right now I've got a divorced dual exhaust, pipes are cut off right before the rear axle..well..turned down, w/e. Its got flowmaster 40s on it, and I believe the cats are stock. The only problem I've got right now is swapping out one of the o2 sensors, because I took it off a 04 v6, apparently the last sensor doesn't match up, ones pink, the others purple =) So my CEL is on.

r3dn3ck 06-30-2007 08:55 AM

^^^ yeppers... I've heard about predator tuners fuggin your smog. Could be that the affected people had turned off their rear o2's.

The problem with turning them off if that the ECU sees that there is no signal coming from them. I've seen this anecdotally from another stang pilot around here but not personally. In any case, the OBD2 sensors have to all be working, not just no codes being thrown in order for you to pass that part.

Keep in mind that california's enforcement of smog laws varies by county. That's due to some rural counties having effectively zero controls and some others having draconian level strictness. It's an unbalanced system that doesn't accomplish the goal it was supposed to and we have to pay 125 bucks for a smog check... burn.T on us.
