Teal_Beast 06-15-2006 11:43 AM

ummm

you getting viruses is not the computers fault. So i wouldnt get a new computers just for that reason.

SpinMedia 06-15-2006 11:44 AM

Yeah honestly its not really your computers fault. But I would deff get a desktop over a laptop

SpinMedia 06-15-2006 11:45 AM

Buy a PC from me =)

TClark22 06-15-2006 12:17 PM

i would go custom build...brand names suck:shifty:

but im going to college next year and i like the fact that its portable (im going to a campus that has free wireless internet..even out side)....and i move about my house alot (my room and the basement) and we have wireless net here too

csledd 06-15-2006 05:47 PM

well first things first, you don't need to be running 2 antiviruses at the same time lol. also norton and mcafee both suck, they can become easily corrupted and i've seen tons of viruses get by them. getting a new pc will get rid of your virus, but it doesn't mean you won't get another one.

anyways.. for laptops i really like sony.. they are expensive but badass. i'd get one with a centrio duo processor

PureStang 06-15-2006 06:35 PM

i used both..but not at the same time..haha

mustangvsix 06-15-2006 07:28 PM

i would say that since it sounds like you want portablitly over power, since laptops cost more for the same power a desktop will have i would say you should get the laptop.

PureStang 06-15-2006 07:34 PM

i just want something that plays my 20gb of music and browse on the net...thats all i use my 2500 desktop for right now....

venom 06-15-2006 11:04 PM

If you look at alot of vids on sites it could be spyware follow these instructions http://forums.spywareinfo.com/index.php?showtopic=11150
.

You should be using only ONE antivirus and it should be running as soon as you boot your computer. and yes norton and mcafee both suck. Not that they don't try, it's just that those are the two most common programs so more viruses are written by people to corrupt them. Thats the same reason Microsoft internet exploder is so bad, being the biggest makes it vulnerable. If you want something free you can try AVG anti-virus, if you don't mind paying Computer assoiciates E-trust antivirus is good. And while you are at it pick up mozilla firefox to replace IE, and download spybot search and destroy for any spyware you may have, which can also open your computer up to attack.

Definitely NOT true..... I work at Circuit City around computers all day (im a Pc tech) The ONLY brand that I would really stay away from is Sony because they have a deal with AOL now, all of their new computers come with AOL Explorer :: puke :: Plus, they're just overpriced for what you get..

If you get a retail laptop I would go with HP, or Toshiba. Just make sure that you get one with a good ATI graphics card and atleast a gig of RAM. Spend somewhere around $1,000. We will also be releasing the first Turion 64 Dual Core very soon, so, I'd advise you to wait.

If you're looking to spend a bit more and get a good laptop with some kick, go with an alienware. They really are the only manufacturer with good gaming capability, ALTHOUGH they were just bought by Microsoft so Im not sure on what that means for them....

If you go with a desktop, I reccommend Gateway, or HP. Make sure you look for the AMD 64bit, or the 64bit X2.

As far as Anti-Virus goes, use Trend Micro PCCillan, or Microsoft LiveOneCare. I use Microsoft.

PS Don't forget that Windows Vista should be out soon, so you might want to wait on that too....

So many variables... So little time to type.... :shifty:

Codiddy 06-16-2006 01:43 AM

ha ha tell him sony is overpriced then advise him to get alienware, which is even MORE overpriced. Just get a dell and call it a day.

Rejekt 06-16-2006 06:29 AM

Reformat and then get some software that asks your permission before it lets anything connect or any apps open. Let me know if you need some software.

dell, you have got to be kidding right? Dell is nothing but a Joke, they use cheaply made parts and crap out as soon as dell wants them to. I don't even want to tell you how many times I have the same model Dell come in at one time with the same problem over and over and over again.. They're like ticking time bombs just waiting to blow up..:nono:

news flash buddy, all the parts come from the same factories anyway. dell has good customer service and they sell in such bulk that its hard for other companies to touch them pricewise. Telling someone not to buy dell because they use cheap parts? well they all use cheap parts. And if someone is dumb enough to bring their machine to CIRCUIT CITY to get it fixed, then i'm also not suprised that they would be dumb enough to break it the same way again. I wouldn't let the monkeys at circuit city within a hundred feet of my machine.

I work for a major retailer fixing PC's.. it's pretty damn funny when someone will come in and pay me $167 to remove spyware/viruses from their PC and then they won't even put any kind of antivirus or antispyware on it because it's "too expensive" :bash:

I think it's hilarious that people out there will actually PAY $167 to remove stuff.

LMAO, PC-Cillen and Spysweeper, right?

Anyway, I'd recommend either getting something like the Toshiba A105-4014 (Centrino Duo w/ 1GB DDR2 memory, lightscribe DL DVD+/-RW, 120GB HD, etc.) or something with similar specs. Don't pay more than $1200, it's just not worth the money.

I work at the same retail store and it actually makes sense. Think about it, for someone like you or me, it does seem ludicrous for someone to pay that much money to do what would be a simple task for you or I. But the people that pay for it are the ones that know very little about their computers and would rather just pay to have something done than learn how to do it or risk doing it wrong. Why spend hours trying to figure out how to set up Anti-virus and anti-spyware programs (trust me, there are some people out there that would seriously take that long) when you could just pay to have a "pro" do it for you?

At first I was on your side, but once I discovered the immense lack of computer sense of the customers, it all made sense.

Codiddy 06-16-2006 11:07 PM

I didn't say it didn't make sense, just that it's hilarious. I understand that for certain people, computers are just a mystery. (Like my grandmother, whose computer I seem to fix once a week) Plus i'm pretty young and our generation grew up on computers.

and +1 for not spending over $1200

csledd 06-16-2006 11:14 PM

well.. we do more than just actually remove the stuff at that price, but oh well. it would seem stupid for anyone who is computer literate to pay that amount, but to people who have no clue.. it's easy.

WaterDR 06-17-2006 04:26 AM

Christie, I know a near fool-proof way to not get viruses. I have had major problems, but those days appear to be over.

go to www.hitmanpro.com

Run the software. If you have a bad case, it may take hours and hours to clean it.

It will run itself, but you may have to click a few tims or bypass a section or two....hopefully not.

Then, install Avast. It is the best anti-virus available. Both programs are free. Just google free avast download and you are set.

If thsi does not work, then just buy a new HD, then install both programs and you will be set for life.
