True Story

Ok, so I am driving home for lunch today and I take a different route then normal(my commute to and from work is 2.2miles)...so I took the "long" route. I am sitting at a stop light waiting to make a left turn onto the street I live on. The light turns green and for some stupid reason I accidentally truned into the opposite way "right turn only lane. To my credit it is a weird intersection and would feel natural to anyone else had they made the same move. So, as I make my retarded turn, a car is coming my way in this Turn lane...this is a "one lane" right turn lane BTW. So, I see this and to avoid a bigger problem I gun it to slither out of this cars way before it enters this turn lane(curbs on both sides)...oops traction control not turned on...I slide the rear end out and artfully counter steer it back straight, no whipping back and forth, just a perfect snap back to straight. Tires squeal as this happens. And, 100 feet later I got blue lights behind me on the street I live on. So I pull over and wait for the cop. I am pissed, and a little nervous. He walks up to me and says, "I'm officer "so and so" and I stopped you for WRECKLESS DRIVING, SPEEDING, and FAILURE TO YEILD. My heart sinks, pulse races.... Where I am from, wreckless driving means you go to JAIL AND you lose your license for a min. of 90 days and up to a $5000 fine. Thats not counting the other infractions either. He asked me if I had valid insurance coverage and I say yes('cause i do) and he walks back to his car. Meanwhile, I am sweating, shaking, got dry mouth...nervous as can be...scared a bit as well. I was thinking he went back to his car to call for another cop to come to the scene to give me a ride to JAIL. I am sick to my stomach...I didn't even slide/squeal on purpose. That part was pissing me off...I thinking...well if I'm gonna go to jail for a driving incident I want it to have at least been fun. So I was pissed. I hear his cruiser door slam and see him walking up to my car through my side mirror...he runs his finger up the side of my car from the trunk to the back of my door. I thought this was a bit weird. So I am waiting for..."Please step out of the vehicle sir, turn around and put your hands on top of the car." He asked me what I was doing instead. I told him the TRUTH, really...everything. How I didn't mean to squeal my tires or fishtail in any way...that this car is new to me (have had it 6 days now) and I am not used to it yet(dealer tag still on) He asked me why that part even had to happen and I told him about my stupid tun move and my moving swiftly to avoid the car that was approching the lane I wasn't supposed to be in in the 1st place. Then....this is where I was floored by the whole thing. This is word for word the ending of this meeting: Cop-asks again, "what insurance co. do you use" Me-"USAA, sir" Cop-"Have a nice day, take it easy out here" and he walks back to his car and waits for me to pull away and turns around and is gone. He could have carted me off to jail. I wish I knew exactly why he didn't.

I couldnt believe this happened. Utter disbelief! It really happened and I had to share the stroy. THIS is how you spell relief!

You sir, are one lucky SOB. Go buy a lottery ticket STAT!

FritoBandito 05-20-2006 07:22 AM

Wow. U musta had a horseshoe up your arse on that one. Must have been a mustang fan.

MattJ 05-20-2006 07:59 AM

You pulled a "get out of jail for free" card on that one...
lol

And people hate the police? We're not all a-holes. The guy prob believed you, ran your history and gave you a break. Don't test the waters too often. Hell, I've let people off who I felt just made a honest mistake and no major harm was done.

So you are an officer...neat. I have always wanted to do that job, but I think I may have partied too much back in college and high school to be able to pass the tests. Not the physical tests. and I dont mean drug tests either.

All I did was tell the guy the entire truth as it happened...no more...no less. I guess he believed me(as he should have) and decided that charging me with wreckless driving was inappropriate since it was really an accident that I fishtailed and squealed tires. :beerchug: to him.

It's like a lot of groups...a few a-holes ruin it for the rest of the bunch.

Thanks for putting your ass on the line to protect the public...:beerchug: to you.

hmmm...

thats how the troppers are in NJ... (to most people who aren't dick head out-of-staters)

If yer nice to the cop they're nice back...

Lucked out, cop was in a good mood, who knows... lucky you

I seem to have very good luck with cops and my mustang, i have been 'pulled over' twice in my mustangs... once in each. The first time was in my old mustang and i am 90% sure it was because the cop was bored (boring town) and he wanted to get a closer look at my old car, lol. He pulled me over for going through a yellow... i had seen the cop already because i picked up my girlfriend who lives not 100 yards down the road, then came back up the road nice and slow for him and the light turned yellow right as i was going through... i was issued a written warning, but im sure i deserve more than that given all the times i have ever sped etc. And the second time was a state trooper in brewster stopped me and my friend's car (stang00) to see if we were stealing anything (hub caps, etc.) from the local honda dealership, he had passed us as we were pulling out of the dealership. He then thanked us on not peeling out of the lot and being "gentlemen"... lol

I was given a huge break the other day too.... country road (easy to speed on.... was on it alone) and its a 45 mph that I was doing.... *sigh* 75 on. :bash:

The sherriff pulled a U-y, and I had a chance to jolt down a side road but I figured it wasnt worth it. Saw the lights coming up behind me, and did the usual (I try to be as nice as possible and try to help them out if I do get pulled over)

Flashers on, drove the speed limit to the next subdivision that was just up the road, pulled over, turned the car off with the dome light on and both hands on the steering wheel.

He saw the number on my car at the track and asked me if I was out racing it, which I was...legally, and he said that was good I wasnt taking it to the street. Took my info, came back and gave me a speech and called me an idiot, and sent me on my way.

I know what your talking about when it comes to relief!

lol... I was drivin to school, on the NJ parkway... speed limit was 55 in this area (near the city)

well I was doing 80...

Saw a trooper on the side of the road... too late...

So I didn't slam the break or nothing, I actually went a tit faster...

So 5 min later... he's in my rear view mirror... lights go on, I pull over...

Comes over to the window... Asks for my papers... stuck my hand in my back pocket... and realized I forgot my wallet at home(w/ license inside)...

So... I explained that I forgot my wallet, but told him that I had my fishin license... he laughed... said ok... checked my paper work and came back the window...

He says... you do know why I pulled you over right?

I say... I was speeding... He says ... "well yah... IN FACT, I had you @ 80mph coming and after you passed you hit 85mph... most people slow down, YOU went faster..."

So I said... well... I figured if you were gonna pull me over then you were gonna pull me over... so i didn't bother to waste my time slowing down...

Then, I told him my pops was a retired trooper... and he wrote me a warning...

Nice guy... turned out my pops knew him... lol

Most depts are not too worried about your party years, pass the background (no mis conv or fel arrest) pass drug test and phys. If your under 35years old, go apply, the worst that will happen is they say no. I was pretty wild in the army and first year of college. After I met my girlfriend ( current wife) in college I settled down...Thank God! I had a little explaining to do during my oral interviews. Just remember the people giving the test are not saints, they have partied as well. The feds are a dif story! Have my interview this Sept.

It wasnt a bad thing really, no violence or anything sick. Got caught doing what a LOT of people did when they were 16.

I can only speak for our dep and the few others I know when I say no, it should not hold you from joining. If it was at the age of 16 and didn't involve an act of sex or violence most depts will be ok with it. I take it it was a minor drug charge? You can removed in most cases also. If it's something you really want to do...go for it!!Welcome to the Blue.

Yup. got snagged with a joint when I was 16...it may be expunged by now though. I love my job now (bmw tech) but I have always wanted to be on the force...seems like an exciting job that has many rewards other than $$.
