learning to drive a stick!

today i learned how to drive a manual trany.
i was suprised how hard it was to start driving....
once i got rolling it was easy but starting was hard....
i was in my grandparents car they tow behind ther motor home...a susuki....
the first shift is at 7 mph....
anyway it was fun....good news is the car still runs and after an hour of practice i was shiftin smooth!!!!:beerchug:

Zaff03GT 03-15-2006 02:22 PM

just keep practicing. Get on some hills and do some starts. Once you get that down its real easy, you wont even have to think about it. Have fun!

Milos 03-15-2006 02:40 PM

I only drove a manual once, and that was my friend's Cavalier.. but only 1st and 2nd... at least I didn't stall mine first time =)

3V2000GT 03-15-2006 02:51 PM

Yeah One day i was bored and my cousins 98 mustang manual was sitting in the garage (cousin was away in navy) so i decided to teach myself how to drive stick, ha is was so fun i didn't stall it at all-ended up driving that car for a year- the hardest part is definately first gear and when you are on a hill but if you have to you can use your parking break on a hill

The parking brake, good point.

95bstallion 03-15-2006 03:27 PM

When first learning a good thing to remember is let off the clutch nice and easy. If you feather it you dont have to give the car any gas you can start it on its own.

GREG@94GT 03-15-2006 03:30 PM

4 cylinder sticks are more difficult to drive than v8's...

WHY?

cause 4 bangers have no torque... you need to rev em high in order to start movin w/out stallin

v8's.... just let the clutch up nice n easy and they roll no problem...:punk:

bitches

GREG@94GT 03-15-2006 03:31 PM

parkin brake = amatuer hour...:loser:

I drive a 4 banger every day and on my whole drive to school i get it started with just letting off the clutch. So that is a somewhat untrue statement.

Zaff03GT 03-15-2006 04:00 PM

its even easier with 4.10's

NoKturnaL 03-15-2006 04:04 PM

learning to drive a stick using grandparent's car... 10 dollars...
learning to drive a stick with a brand new 02 GT...priceless...

heh thats how I learned...the salesman taught me.

Zaff03GT 03-15-2006 04:07 PM

I learned when i was 13 on a f450 superduty dump truck.

macs03GT 03-15-2006 04:09 PM

first time i learned was on a hill....that sucked becuase my dad wouldn't let me off the hill untill i got up it smoothly. It worked though!!! Def take it to a hill and try it out.

macs03GT 03-15-2006 04:11 PM

whoa i didn't notice it but you were born in 1991?!?!?!?! Wow i was already i school by then. CRAZY!!!

MattJ 03-15-2006 04:17 PM

I had about mabye 20 minutes of actually driving manual tranny cars before I got my GT which is stick. So, yea I pretty much learned on this.

TEXASPAUL 03-15-2006 04:25 PM

well in the car i was in the gas pedal was REALLY SENSITIVE
i couldnt rev it consantly..
plus it didnt have a tach...just a shift light!!!!
i have to agree with the torque thing

Why were on the subject of manual how long has anyone went on a stock clutch?

New Edge 03-15-2006 05:30 PM

Um...that makes it easier there big guy... with a higher rev and longer clutch you can stop on a hill... with a short clutch you are more likely to pop the clutch too fast... I learned how to control the throttle first, then work with teh clutch...

If you master the throttle the clutch will have to work...

eh... torqu def makes it easier...

and the only 4 banger stick i drove was an 00 VW jetta... it was as slow as a skateboard compared to my car...

its not hard to drive a stick... i really dont understand how people have a problem...

The two cars i've really driven driven are mycar and my friends WRX, he had a speed clutch and short throw and it was much harder to drive then mine...

DarkSith 03-15-2006 06:50 PM

I learnt how to drive a stick in a 4 banger, and then I test drove a stock gt and found it alot esier to drive. When I got my car It took me a little while to get use to it, of course it had 3.73's when I got it. I guess I was'nt use to how responsive it was to the throttle.

Ehhh idk I can drive all manuals with easy...I got a long clutch and low rev and it's hard for most people that drive my car to keep it on a hill... but for me it's easy...

THat being said when I drove my friends car wit the short clutch it seemed harder, but i still didn't rev it that much...

GREG@94GT 03-15-2006 06:59 PM

like i said... sticks are easy to drive regardless of the car...

it certainly is easyier to drive a stick on a car w/ more torque...

i learned on a 4 cyl. and it is much easier to start a more torque manual. if you stall out a gt or any muscle car, theres something wrong

start 'em early!!!

mustangvsix 03-15-2006 09:25 PM

i definately agree with the idea that driving a 4-banger stick being harder then a mustang gt, i learned to drive a stick in my neighbors small kia truck , and then when i drove my cousins 03 Gt:punk: , it was like easy, i didn't even have to try that thing practically drives itself, and i drive an auto:(

Foster98GT 03-15-2006 10:21 PM

I Learned on my aunts 1988 grang am. After a couple of hours i was a pro. I took my DL road test on that car and failed for speeding:loser: Years and a lot of speeding tickets later, ive for the most part calmed down.

or get a auto

rebelyell 03-15-2006 11:54 PM

I started out driving a manual when i was 16 (my moms VW superbeetle LOL). Every Car I owned was a manual shift. Until I got my first auto ( old beat up 86 monte carlo). I had to learn to drive an auto.. My next ride was my brand new 88 GMC truck (auto). Now I'm back to square with my mustang (manual) Gawd dang I missed shifting gears for too many years. :devil2:

mine went to about 60K.... (shown below)

I put the blower on at 59,500 though ;)

I had a bit of a tricky time with the extra torque as the car would buck on me a lot. But I got use to it

TWebb023 03-16-2006 07:44 AM

haha well how bout this, i bought my car knowing that i wanted to drive a stick, just a feeling. i bought my 01 gt and then my dad taught me that night at 10 pm and drove to school the next day, choppy every once in a while but i got there and back:clap:
