somebody PLEASE help me out here....

The local speed shop quoted me $650 on gear installation...

they said that the install REQUIRED new bearings and whatnot(he said some other stuff too). So here is my question...

If it get the MT kit(w/ the oil, calibrator, and gears)...is that REALLY all I need? or is there more to it?

please help...

Lances03SVT 01-02-2006 10:32 AM

$650 :censored: Did that include everything?

I see they like ripping people off...

Bearings are always good to replace when you do a gear install. The Ford Racing gears come with an install kit (shim and crush sleeve), but no bearings.

As far as everything else, our kit will give you the gear oil you need and the calibrator that youll need to correct your speedo. Beyond that you need to get the install done, which SHOULD run you $200 to $250.

no kiddin man. They quoted me $150 for my x-pipe install....got it done by a friend.

$375 for the springs install....got it done w/ a friend.

Unfortunately, I won't even attempt this w/ a friend so I know I'm basically at the mercy of the shops. I dont mind paying 3-350 but I'd prefer to pay under 400

MattJ 01-02-2006 11:01 AM

I paid 80 for mine. Id say just get the MPP install kit. Thats all I needed for mine and mines great with no problems or whine.

Gears ------------$175
Bearing kit--------$120
New trac loc discs--$50
oil/friction modifier--$10
-------------------------------
total------------$355
labor------------$250
----------------------------
grand total-----------$605
$650 isn't all that out of line if he is replacing all of the above.

Lances03SVT 01-02-2006 11:12 AM

I paid $150 for my install.

Danny you need to find a better shop!!!
Some of you Florida people help a brother out damn!!!!!

floppy 01-02-2006 11:14 AM

$650!!!!!!!!!!!! damn...... it cost me $150 to install and the gears were $200 that included everything. hey danny you dont live that far away why dont you drive over here and get them done. 1.5 - 2 hours at most.

ModMotorRacer 01-02-2006 11:16 AM

I paid zero. So I think $150 is high. Going fast costs money. I know what is involved with the swap, some specialty tools and some time.I am sure you got gears only for that, I would always put in new bearings/races/axle seals no matter what. You have it torn down, do it right.

Lances03SVT 01-02-2006 11:19 AM

Only had 3000 miles on it when I had it done did'nt need alot of new stuff.Friend of mine had his done at the same shop with bearings and all for the same price.

There is NO WAY a shop replaced all the bearings, races, seals, axle seals etc AND installed the gears for $150. The install kit alone is $120. So sounds like your shop likes to say they installed stuff that they didn't, or they like to lose money. I'll bet i can guess which one it is. :shifty:

I'd find another shop man. I got mines installed for $125 plus the cost of fluids...pretty sweet deal if you ask me.. :)

dannyb785 01-02-2006 11:37 AM

Here's a question...should I just get it done when I go up to MPH this summer to get my s/c put in? Is it ok to get gears and a s/c at the same time? Just as long as I'm not hard on it too quickly

DarkSith 01-02-2006 11:49 AM

If you already have the gears I would'nt wait till summer, I would take them to the shop floppy got his installed.

no, i havent ordered them yet. i was gonna wait until I found a good, affordable source to install them before I buy them. the install at MPH costs $350 and I'm fine with that, I just wanna make sure it's ok for fresh new gears to handle 350 rwhp right away.

GREG@94GT 01-02-2006 01:15 PM

it wouldnt hurt to replace seals and bearings...

idk how much it generally goes for...
they may be tryin to rip you off...

but seals and bearing will never be bad to replace... its prolly better to get new ones than not...

i would go elsewhere

floppy 01-02-2006 01:37 PM

hey danny, just order the gears now and come over here to get them installed. i've driven to tampa many times, it's not a bad ride. dont wait till summer to put gears in.

A little off topic, but...

How much would my speedo be off by if I installed 4.10 gears? Gears seem like a great buy at first, but then you add in the cost of the kit, install, and tuner and before you know it's up to like $1000.

It may cost that much but you dont need a tuner if your worried about price. Just a Speed Cal and i've seen some used lately. Your speedo will be off enough to annoy you. i'd be more worried about your Odometer, no one ever takes that into consideration.

thundergod 01-02-2006 05:27 PM

gear install

got mine done in bradenton at larry's auto service 941-758-9879 for $ 275.00
automotive engineering recomended them to me when i bought gears.

ModMotorRacer 01-02-2006 05:46 PM

Honestly i think some shops like to inflate the price simply because they don't want to do them. They take time, they are messy and frankly they aren't very profitable.
