STEEDA UDP problems!!! help!!
 

Ok guys, I was trying to put in the udp's but when I tried to remove the pulley from the alternator, it wouldnt come off!! We tried normal screw, didnt work. Then we tried an impact wrench. Didnt come off. Then we tried a pipe wrench. The problem is...when we turn the screw in the pulley, the inside of the alternator turns also. So basically, we are turning for nothing. Can anybody help bc the pulley already eaten up sort of from holding onto it with the wrenches. The belts are back on and I drove about 20 miles so it seems okay for now, but I'm worried that since the pulley is eaten up that it will eventually tear up the belt. HELP!

Have you tried taking it off with the belt on?

Wont work. Take the alternator out and use an Impact GUN (yes thats right GUN) to take it off.

Your also going to need an Impact gun for the crankshaft pulley, and it will probably help with the water pump as well.

Make sure you have some High Temp Silicon Gasket Maker (Red = Good) and a Harmonic Balancer Puller.

Sorry, I meant that I used the impact gun and it didnt work. We were using a clamp to hold the pulley in place while the gun did its work, but there was no luck. And yes, the alternator was taken out. We didnt have enough leverage with it in.

And we tried it for a few minutes with the belts still on, but we didnt want to damage the belts. and as i said, there wasnt enough room to try so we took the whole thing off.

The problem was that even when we got the screw to turn, it was turning the inside of the alternator at the same time...which basically did nothing. I need to know how to get the screw loose from the inside of the alternator.

Sure your hitting the nut at a straight angle? Take the alternator out and try it that way, sometimes you just have to pull that MOFO out to get the damn thing off.

trust me, we were doing it right. The guy had already put udp's on his 01 cobra. As I said, we even got the screw to move, but it was apparently attached to a part inside of the alternator and so it was moving with the screw. grrrr. I'm lost :confused:

Take the alt. to a shop and ask them to get the bolt off.

okay i think i posted instructions on how to do this before. all you have to do is stick a screw driver that is long enough to keep the blades inside the altenator from spinning and it will come right off. make sure that the blades are firmly pressed against the screw driver before you take off the nut. good luck getting the impact gun to fit between the radiator and the crank pulley. i had to use a breaker bar. just do a search for steeda pulleys and i posted some instructions in a classfied section the thread starter name should be stangdude27.

I took mine into Autozone and they did it for free. They took off the old one and put on the new one.

Most shops will do the alt pulley for free..

Back in the day (yes, I'm that old) a lot of alternators came with small holes meant to accept a phillips screwdriver to jam the works so the bolt could be loosened. Usually down on the right side. Last several Mustang alternators I had to remove cooperated with just the impact gun, so didn't look for this, but wonder if these alternators also feature this...
