Rear end making noise

My rear end has been making some noise as of last week. I think it might of finally after all these years have gotten hurt. Will find out in a few hours once I get it up on jackstands and pull some things apart to inspect it.

what kind of noise? you may have just crushed the crush sleeve a bit. PITA to replace but at least you don't have to re-shim the sides.

It's a howl that changes with speed. I hoped it was tire noise, but swapping on the 315 nittos from the DD 275 Sumi's let me know that was not the case. I noticed the gas tank cover has rear end fluid all over it. So I might be lucky with just a leaking rear cover and no fluid in the pumpkin. Won't know till I get my MG out of the garage here. Just washed and detailed it and its so hot here I am taking my time so I don't die lol.

see if you can tell if it's leaking from front or back. in any case, no fluid is bad and a sign of damage.

Well the rear end was low, but still had 2 qts in it. So that is not the problem. The ring and pinion have normal wear as do the spider gears in the posi. I am at a loss. Looks like it's either the pinion bearing or axle bearings are bad. Might be time for me to finally build the rear end with some axles and all new bearings and seals and some 3.73's. I am gonna fill it with fresh fluid and go drive it to see what she is like. If its not good, I will be ordering parts tonight.

burn.T. Good luck.

I'm still betting it's the crush sleeve. New bearings are always good though.

If I am going to take it apart, I might as well do what I have wanted to do for some time now. You know what I mean.

How many miles do you have on your car Dustin?

91K bitches. I'm pretty sure we have a posi that is coming apart. I looked it over some more and its got stress cracks all over the posi. So no hard driving at the moment for the mustang.

And fuck my bank account!

I replaced mine around that time too. My pinion was hella loose, damn crush sleeve was never replaced when I changed the seal out. Jacked everything up after that.

I could hold the passenger side rear wheel and spin the left one with very little friction. To top it off I could physically shake the pinion a good half inch.

haha that sounds pretty awesome.
