Need help choosing mustang to buy

I sold my 2006 mustang v6 pony package and am wanting to buy a v8 mustang. I'm considering a terminator, or a 2001 cobra. I've found a 2004 cobra coupe with 122,000 miles making 480 rwhp for $16,995 and I've found a stock 2001 cobra with 92,000 miles for $8,300. I'm wondering if I should buy the 2004 and already have tons of power and can customize it and add more power later or buy the 2001 and use the $8,600 to customize it and it maybe make more power than the 2004?

I don't know what to tell you, but I'm after a Cobra too, just not yet.
I wouldn't get a Terminator with that many miles. I can get one for like $20k with 30k miles or less. Almost better to go with the less miles Cobra.
Wouldn't you want to mod it your self and do what you want to it? It's not hard to acheive 480 RWHP in a Termi.
Is it going to be a daily driver, Summer driver or what?

garner1 07-08-2010 07:08 AM

I called the seller and it's 122,000 miles on the body, but the motor only has 2,000 miles. And it has a stage IV ported blower, pulleys, tune, intake, exhaust, throttle body, heat exchanger, short shifter, clutch, IRS brace, brake calipers, new chrome rims and tires, expensive touch screen Navigation system, custom Kenwood System, Alpine Amp, and Infinity speakers. It will be a daily driver

Sounds like a killer deal.

No subframe connectors?

If the bodys in good shape i'd say go for it. Make sure he provides all receipts, documentation, etc. Especially of the motor swap.

Offer him 15k.

Edit: He's only making 480rwhp with that setup? Hmm.

That's pretty usual for those mods. Termis make power easy, but the eaton has it's limits. And without a killer chiller and some LTs, it's really not going to see much above 490-500rwhp.

Poor little heaton gets tuckered out after so many RPMs.

I agree with Steeda though. If the body is in good shape, and you test drive it and see that everything is good (no obsessive rattling or anything) then it sounds like a killer deal.

But he HAS to have proof of the motor rebuild and of all things bought for the car.

Yeah I was thinking the same thing, but you never know.
My friend has a 03 Cobra that's currently at 532 HP and 483 TQ at the wheels. That was done on a Mustang dyno.
All I can remember is Ported and Polished Eaton, Pulley Kit, Tune and different rear and front spine or whatever it's called.

Any opinions on the 2001 cobra for $8,300 with 92,000 miles?

garner1 07-09-2010 02:30 PM

Ok I found another cobra. It's a 2001 with a full 2004 cobra swap. It has 2004 cobra engine, 6speed with Stage 3 clutch, 3” Off road X pipes, Magnaflow mufflers with 3” Echo tips, K&N Filter, Moroso Inter cooler, Supercharge at 17psi boost with 2.7 pulley , Aftermarket pulleys, Diablo chip, 17 x9 & 17x10.5 FR500 wheels, 2” drop all around, Smoked taillights, Red Ford Badge, Suede lather on dash and seats, Sound dampening spray. It makes 475 rwhp. Has 75,000 miles on the body and 58,000 miles on the motor. He wants $15,000. Is this a good deal?

99MustangGT 07-09-2010 04:26 PM

Get it. It's a great deal, but like stated before make sure he has the paper work.

garner1 07-09-2010 05:36 PM

I'll ask if he has documentation. Nice car 99MustangGT!! What do you guys think of a license plate that says Z06 kllr?

Thanks man, if you know it can whoop a Z06's ass then get it.

garner1 07-09-2010 05:54 PM

According to a website I found they do 0-60 in 3.6 seconds and the 1/4 mile in 11.70. How much horsepower do I need in a cobra to beat that?

I wouldn't worry about it and it all depends on what's been done to each car, model, year, ect....
You also have to remember that a Mustang wont hook up nearly as good as a Z06.

That 01 with the 04 swap would get chewed up by a Z06.

My 04 with similar mods will pull a few cars on a base C6, a C6 Z06 will pull cars on me.

To really be a Z06 killer you need a KB, Whipple, or TT and need to be seeing 600rwhp at least. Then you can handle bolt-on Z06s and stockers of course.

Don't get that plate until that point

I think that cars a good deal though. Just make sure he verifies it all, and just make sure the car drives good. He probably got everything from a salvaged Termi, so just make sure the trans and everything feels good.

15k is a hella good deal though. In the words of Krenogin, "jew" him down to like 13,500 and take it.,

Would LS killr be better? I'm looking for license plate ideas cause there's a 2003 Z06 by me and his is SVT kllr so I want something to contradict that. Or would I be better going with my name on the license plate since I'm only 15 and terminators are like Ferraris at my school?

garner1 07-09-2010 10:35 PM

Would it be good for me to invest in a differential cooler? Maximum motorsports has one for $1,379, are there any cheaper than this?

BikerSk8rKid 07-10-2010 01:04 AM

Our opinion is our opinion, it's what you think and like is what matters. If you like it and want to get it, then so be it.
I would do it, whether my car can beat it or not, but they don't know that. The real question though is why would you do it just because of him?
Think about all the other cars you could be killing and what not. That's just my thought on it.

Don't get me wrong, it would be funny to **** with him/her.

08mustang_gt 07-10-2010 06:27 AM

LS Killr would be better, but I just prefer the non-cocky custom plates.

Like BOOSTED or something would be cooler, because it shows you don't think you're all high and mighty.

A differential cooler is only needed if running a track. The main thing will be keeping the intake temperatures down. A killer chiller would be a much better way to spend your money if you're looking for mods.

Is a killer chiller sort of the same thing as a water/methanol injection kit?

Yes. It uses your AC to cool the intercooler fluid. So it's water/methanol, without the side effects of water/methanol.

You never have to fill anything, never have to worry about damaging anything.

Also, look at velocity turbo systems for their intercooler/heat exchanger kits. Their shop site is down, but they are the best on the market for 03/04 intercooler and cooling accessories.

Realize that the main reason most 03-04 Cobras make low power is because the air gets hot and stays hot. It's one big heatsoaking mess. Get those IATs down and it'll come to life. Then if more power is needed, there are companies that can make that happen. :D

99MustangGT 07-10-2010 05:12 PM

I have never heard of them, I'll have to check out there site when it's back up.

The 2001 to 2004 conversion seller has no documentation because the previous owner did the swap. Still a good deal or should I walk away?

99MustangGT 07-10-2010 11:04 PM

See if you can get the owners information and make a friendly call or email about the car, I don't know. It might be best to walk away, it all depends how the car drives and how it looks like it was maintained.

Hmmm....thats fishy. I'd have to probably say pass.

There is absolutely no way to be able to tell if the car is truly a ported car or not, unless you pull the eaton off and look at it. So to not have documentation for stuff like that would be kind of a killer.

The other mods can be looked over to see what they truly are, and if they are what he says they are. Idk man, it's still a good deal if everything is in great working order. But, realize that even though it has an 03-04 setup, that you'll never get back out of it what you put in, versus if it was a true 03-04 you probably would.

garner1 07-18-2010 08:48 AM

After looking at what's available I've decided to wait. Thanks for the help everyone
