I have been researching all over the inet and in the forum here too but never found a clear answere to what I was looking for.

I would like to install a TransGo shiftkit for my auto mustang, now I heard people just bashing that kit and other's loving it. Now I'd like to know why or why not to get it.

Also in addition to the shift kit which is like $50 on ebay do I need anything else, i heard a new tranny cooler is required but is it really?

Here is my setup so far idk if that would change the answere.

maybe the 3.73 will change the deal, but thats what I'm asking you guys,
also any guess how much the shop would charge me to get the kit and maybe if I need a cooler installed?

I had that kit in my 4r70W tranny in my 94 T-bird. the transmission only lasted 10k miles after that and it was fine before then.

dunno if the stang 4R70W is different tho.

 

The transmissions are the same, and I had the same experience in my old '99. Then I did some searching on the internet and found many stories the same as mine. TransGo kills 4R70W's.

go to tccoa.com and read the tech articles on how to do the JMod. Once I got the new transmission in my 99, it was JModded for half the price of the TransGo kit, and lasted over 50k miles, with over 130 track passes with 4200 stall and 4.30 gears. It was still driving and shifting fine when I sold the car.

 

how would it damage your transmission and are all experiences bad with it

 

increases in line pressure aren't always good. Shifts that are more sudden frag planetary gears faster, heat builds up, clutches and bands wear faster... it's just not a damn bit good by my research (done especially for you).

 

The main problem with the TransGo kit is the manual valve. It's very crappily (is that a word?) made and tends to stick in the bore and burn the transmission up. That's what happened to mine, and I've seen quite a few others with the same problem.

My question is: Why would you spend more on the TransGo kit than the J-Mod cost, when if you search the internet, the recommendation from people who know for over 8 years now has been that the J-Mod is the best setup for the 4R70W? It's really that easy. The parts to do it are less than half the price of the Trans-Go, and it's proven to be safe and reliable, unlike the TransGo.

As far as your last question about are all the experiences Bad? I'm sure they aren't, but if 8 people told you not to sleep with that girl because she gave them herpes, but 2 people said they hit it and didn't get herpes, would you bang her without a rubber? That's kind of what you do when you start thinking that your outcome will be good, when others have been so bad.

thanks guys, @redneck, thanks for the research and @bullitt awesome example! thx guys I just dont feel confident doing the jmod myself i can do stuff pretty good but im the kind of person who is just never lucky enough to get it all working prefect .

 

I had it in my F150 and the first tranny lasted 30k with a transgo kit. Then the 2nd died about 1 month after install. Do the J-mod is easy and you can do it yourself. Just do some research and reading and trust me you can do it.

Here is the updated J-mod that should be done. Yes they talk about crown vics, but its the same transmission.
