Exhaust....

So I'm unhappy with the Flowmasters that came on my car. It's decently loud but still too quiet and just has a bad sound to it. I have an offroad H pipe with BBK longtube and I KNOW I can get a better sound out of my car. My car has cut outs but it's way too loud and inpractical to run around with them open all the time. I don't have a lot of money to work with right now, but my friend works at a shop owned by his friend and will do work for me for cheap. I was thinking of having the flowmasters taken off and dump it after the mufflers. Do you think that would sound better? Or would you suggest different mufflers?

Also I was thinking if I do end up dumping it, to get the Roush rear bumper peices that cover the tail pipe cut outs. What do you guys think about that?

You can dump it, but don't take the mufflers off. If anything, just replace them. It'll be stupidly loud with no mufflers.

I would just change mufflers.

Sorry for jumping in your thread with a question of mine, but is "dumping it" just putting on the mufflers and then nothing afterwards? Does it make the tone different or just louder?

No, dumping is when you cut off the tail pipes, and then put on a piece of pipe aiming either downwards or down and slightly out.

Hey Spike is that your setup? I rememeber you saying that you dump. Are those Flowmasters?

spike_africa 08-28-2009 08:06 AM

No that's not my car. Just a photo I found to show him what it looks like.

My car does have dumps, but mine are angled out slightly to help get the fumes out from under the car. Though I am putting either a new catback on the car or tail pipes sometime soon. I have had dumps for like 4 years and want something new.

if that's your car in your sig then yes put tails on it, your car looks "clean" personally I don't think a mustang should be dumped, I think they look tons better with tails/tips.

Yeah I definitely won't take off the mufflers. You guys think that's the problem though? What mufflers should I go with?

00blkstanggt 08-28-2009 11:55 AM

Since I switched to dumps, I have loved it. Gives a nice deep rumble at low rpm. I have flowmaster mufflers as well and I like the sound. I also have LTs, but an o/r x-pipe. Do you have the electronic cutouts? If so, if you take them off, let me know.

'02MineralGreyGT 08-28-2009 11:59 AM

I had the same problem. I had macs with my catted x pipe and it was too quiet, droned like a bitch, and only sounded good around 2000-2400 rpms. Above and below that it was basically sounded like air with no sound or tone at all. I bought SLP loudmouth 1s and I love it! I love the sound of it but then again you have a o/r mid so it may be too loud. Otherwise Id look into Borlas. A bit on the steep side price wise but they are by far the best sounding cat back imo

x04V6x 08-28-2009 01:06 PM

So should I just switch out mufflers or do I need all new piping? If I need a whole new catback I won't even bother with it, I don't need to spend that much on exhaust. I would like to dump it but I agree that these cars do look a lot better with tail pipes. Yep I have the electric cutouts, they're nice and convienant but they aren't made to last, I've already had the set screws vibrate out once and they're just barely hanging in now I can tell because they only are working half the time. They need to be designed to not vibrate apart.

I would suggest the slp lm1 or lm2 resonators to replace your mufflers. I think the lm1's are like 150 bux for the pair of mufflers... I think with catted midpipes they sound like shit but if you have an offroad mid like you do they sound fuckin beautiful... Here's an example..

this will fix the bolt loosening from vibration issue

spike_africa 08-28-2009 05:44 PM

Muffler choice is up to you really. Unless you run cats LM1 kinda sucks for daily use. I'm not talking out of my ass I had them with an o/r H-pipe.

Danimal1209 08-28-2009 06:21 PM

home depot has that threadlocker for like 4 bucks. That will keep the bolts from vibrating loose like laz said.
