rear caliper PITA, any help??
 

ok im trying to finish up the brake replacement and the rear caliper piston absolutely will not compress.....One write up i saw said to compress with a clamp or WE and it worked perfectly on the fronts, now on the rear the caliper will not budge. The haynes manual says to screw in the piston clockwise but there is no movement either. what is the correct method on the rears? Are they diff from the front??? 03V6rear discs

does the parking brake matter??? should it be engaged or not??

They do have to be rotated you can't just compress them it's possible that if you tried to compress them they are broken. To rotate them you need a special tool

go to kragen, get the little cube looking disc brake piston crompression tool (about 1 cubic inch in size, hollow cube shaped, ~10 bucks) with the little spuds on the corners. You'll probably have to grind down one of the spuds to get it to fit right. Set the caliper on the mounting bracket so it has some resistance to you pushing. Use a 3/8" ratchet and that tool to turn clockwise while you press good-n-hard on the piston. It'll compress as it rotates. Spin it in until it's about flush with the caliper surface. just spinning it won't do the trick, you must push and rotate at the same time. Beware that the tool will slip off repeatedly and you'll want to be ready for that or get some bloody knuckles.

yeah i had to go to the parts store and buy that damn tool, but hey it freaking worked though. I wouldve never compressed it with the damn c clamp. Thanks for the advice, saved me bout a few hours LOL. At least i wont have to do it again for a couple years.

i thoroughly hate compressing the rear calipers for that reason. i hate them with a passion.

Thats a good thing to have. Sometimes you have to loosen the bleeder on the calipers to get them to compress.

Sometimes even with the tool, you may have to crack the bleeder screw to get it the retract al the way in. Like r3d said, the cube should come with Band-aids.

Needle nose pliers and some skill is all it takes to push and turn those back in.

autozone loans out the tool you need. for $50. take it back you gte your money back. its what i did and it worked like a charm

I know everyone has said this already, but one more person beating it into the ground always helps.

You need a special tool. I used the "Loan a tool" service from Auto Zone. As soon as you use it on your caliper, your face will either light up with amazement, or you will be so freakin pissed you didnt know this earlier.
