just got my new mustang! weird noise! help

hey all-

been crusing these forums for about two months now and finally got my 1st mustang yesterday! a black on black 97 GT 5spd! (pics to come) but recentely driving around i hear a weird noise coming from my rear end? it sounds like metal rubbing on metal....could it be the ring and pinion? the noise is most noticable under 35 mph and under acceleration? any ideas? thanks

My friens 98 GT had the same problem! But his was kind of a grinding noise! He decided to not do anything about it and 2 months later, down the highway his rear end just gave out! When we finally took it to a shop he needed his whole rear end replaced! Axles, differential, gears, etc....

Have it check out ASAP!

You can remove the filler plug and make sure there's lube in there. The filler plug is on the front driver side.Use a 3/8 inch ratchet and extension to remove. The lube should be level with the bottom of the filler hole.If there's some lube still in there the rear end might be saved.Keep a close eye on this as if it goes bad it will be as far from home as you can get at three am in a thunderstorm.

hahahaha

you farted.

Lay off the broccoli and beans.

sorry, i have no useful info to provide other than some rambling.

Anyways, Nice to see another high altitude stang owner. Im in littleton myself, springstang is well, in the springs. he is also an arrogant little bastard who cant do stripes if his life depended on it. But he has the nicest fuel door ive ever seen. which i guess is enough to make up for all his personality flaws.

good luck and we will see you around

If it has lots of miles...prolly axle bearings or differential bearings. Doubtful that its the gears themselves. Complete rebuild kit with ALL bearings races and seals is about $125. Good investment.
