Crazy Problem!!!!!!

Hey guys
I am new to the mustang world and have fell in love. I have a problem though. I have a 95 manual v6 no mods. Sometimes when it is cold out it wont crank. I first thought it was the starter so I have a new one on there now. Then I got a new battery. Then I went and had the wires done on the battery cables to make sure they were all grounded correctly. This morning I went to crank and nothing. The lights will come on strong. The horn will blow. Radio fine. Just wont crank. There is no ticking sound or anything. Turn the key and you hear nothing. Someone mentioned to me that the fly wheel could be in the wrong position. Any ideas would be helpful. Thanks

Also the charging system is fine. Going to take it to a shop but wanted to see what you guys think.

You mean dearlership? I keep seeing people say stealership and I get confused, haha. Yeah I had a problem with mine, but mine is a 5.0 GT. I had my friend use a test thing to find out my problem. Now I think the test bullshit can be wrong. So I'm getting a tune up kit and getting an Ignition Coil.

I would go take it to any shop that can run a test on the car to find out. Unless someone has an idea of what is wrong, but yeah I would still do it.

Me, I had to replace my Mass Air Flow Sensor, at the same time got a K&N Air Filter. I'm not going to mod my car because I want a SVT Cobra, newer style. I found one and now I keep looking at it, it makes me mad that I don't have it. :/

first off your starter wasnt loose, they just say something simple to charge you something. The guy prolly didnt do anything just had it sit after he checked it.

anyway. two things to check is the fuel pressure and spark. you need to find yourself a good all round mechanic that won't screw you. they are out there.

venom 01-03-2009 06:50 AM

Does the engine turn over? As if it just sits dead it could be your Pats system. Mustangs have chips inside the keys. You can not just make a copy at Walmart and expect the car to start as these keys are dealer only and you must have 2 in order to program them.

Another thing it could be if they ever installed an aftermarket alarm, it may have an issue and could cause this as it uses a box that connect to the pats.

If its a manual or stick make sure your clutch sensor is working on the pedal inside the car. If its faulty if may not detect you pressing down on the clutch.

I also need a mass air flow sensor but if will that stop it from cranking?
That is the only thing my check engine light brought back on my 95 so im assuming thats good.
Will check fuel pressure and spark.
No alarm at all
How would I know if its the pats systmem?
Also is there a way to know if the clutch sensor is good w/o taking it off

The Mass Air Flow Sensor came on after you did a full test on your car?

The maf had been on
It was the clutch switch
That thing has been bad for a while
Took it to an electician and before he touched the car he said that it prob what it is
You take the clutch and slam it to the floor and if it tries to crank at any point but wont turn over that is your prob

I'm glad you found the problem. How much is that going to cost ya?

venom 01-04-2009 09:27 AM

The clutch sensor/switch is just a mechanical switch. You just need to jumper the two wires with a paper clip to bypass it and see it you still have the same issue.

cdjnight 01-04-2009 11:56 AM

i had the same problem on my 99 V6, and it was something in the colum, I had it to dealer 4 times before they figured it out. It was under warrenty though, all I can remember them saying was that an electrical plug in column was loose or not pushed in all the way from the factory. Never had a problem after that. It would work sometimes and then it wouldn't it was wierd, everything else came on but wouldnt turn over.

10507158 01-04-2009 04:04 PM

the part is 25 from auto zone and then the labor is 60 or less
he has not gave me an exact price
i could have put it in myself but since he had diagnosed it and no one else could it wouldnt be right to just take my car and go do it
it is a 95 and a lot of switches have went bad on it so he gon go thru all my electrical stuff before he gives it back to me
but before him i paid the dealership 60 to check it out but im gon c if i can get that back bc they didnt solve my problem at all and they didnt tell me anything i didnt already know
i paid another shop 20 to professionally go thru my battery wires with the possibility that i was making a minor mistake since it was still not cranking
in the end this prob would have cost me 165 over a 3 week period

Yeah that's not right, I wouldn't even have waited that long. You should be able to get your money back since they didn't find out the problem, as long as you have proof you paid. If the guy is checking all the electrical, then yeah I would let him do the rest, and that sounds like a good deal. I hope I don't have to go through any of that. How many miles does your Mustang have?

10507158 01-05-2009 07:36 AM

it has like 137000 on the odometer when it stopped
i have had it like 3 months and have put n a new tranny
motor is strong and i have did a lot of things to it
maybe 2 grand worth
im doing the suspension next
just going stock
i want a more smoother ride

venom 01-05-2009 08:17 AM

You need this if your tranny has an electrical vss http://www.speedometergears.com/

10507158 01-05-2009 03:53 PM

im just gon get a cluster out of a junk yard
so guys i lied about my car being fixed
once again i get to my location and it wont crank
the electrician put in a new clutch switch and he checked the ignition switch
there was still a problem so he played around w the fuse box and thought he had it fixed
i get to my destination and go to crank and i still have a problem

car wont turn over at all
radio headlights and horn work
brand new battery and starter
any help would be greatly appreciated
any ideas no matter how silly they sound

10507158 01-05-2009 03:55 PM

and i also went to the ford place and they wouldnt give me any money back
they said they did more than they had to otherwise they would have
i didnt ask them to diagnose the check engine light nor did i ask them to find out where the winding noise came from
i already knew the answers to all that
the guy was a jerk

I would let it go, too much crap to go through and get what you want. If it was me I would hunt them until I felt better.

venom 01-06-2009 05:28 AM

If you get a cluster from the junkyard its going to fail or has failed already. As it did happen to me already. Only way to fix it is to replace gears with one not made by Ford.

10507158 01-06-2009 06:23 PM

so let me ask this
would i have a pats system if i have the base model car
its does not even have power door locks or windows
no alarm
i would hate to have to live w this problem or sell my car

10507158 01-06-2009 10:24 PM

worse case scenario what all wires and switches would i have to change to without doubt the problem would be fixed

1996StangGT 01-07-2009 06:23 AM

The guy that checked all the switches and the wires do you know if he checked the ignition itself?

10507158 01-07-2009 07:36 PM

what do u mean by the ignition itself?
i saw him take the switch off and make sure all the wires were tight and he cleaned it w an electronic cleaner

if u turn the key and it doesnt crank the radio and clock goes off as if i was cranking it

he thinks it may be fixed now
i picked it up today and it has been cranking fine
i think when i turned the switch once though it didnt crank then the next time it crunk
i wasnt sure if it was me though bc i was on my phone and doing so many things at once

still would like to know all the wires and switches i would have to change out

1996StangGT 01-08-2009 03:59 AM

I was talking about the ignition switch selenoid. I have heard that they will go out pretty often. I have a 96 GT with 100000 miles and never had a problem with it. Just thought I would throw in my 2 cents. As far as what would need to be changed as far as wires I have no clue. There could be several different problems. The first thing I would do is change that selenoid though.

10507158 01-08-2009 09:57 AM

the problem is still not fixed
got off work at 4 am and it wouldnt crank
still trying to figure out what it is

cdjnight 01-08-2009 04:18 PM

pull the colum cover off and make sure everything is plugged in and tight, mine was in the colum. The other thing to check is batt voltage, sounds wierd but if it drops too low the computer shuts everything down and wont let it crank at all. And yes, base models can com with Pats system.

10507158 01-08-2009 07:53 PM

thanks guys

think im just going to re wire the entire starting
nothing seems to work

10507158 01-09-2009 08:05 PM

ok craziest thing happened
the guys who put my transmission in didnt hook everything up correctly
they left my wiring harness disconnected and my computer wasnt connected
it was definitely their fault
when i went to go pick it up after the tranny it wouldnt crank
so if they are real business men they will do something bout it
think i may have spent 600 on this problem over time
some of it w the same mechanics

venom 01-10-2009 07:04 AM

You never mentioned that it happened after someone did some work on it lol .
