Car acting funny

I was driving my 1973 mustang around today, and i forgot that when i start i gotta press the gas pedal down, then release then press again. The first time i press the gas the engine shuts off, but when i take my foot off it starts running again. Any idea what might be causing it? At first i thought it might of been the exhaust leak at the manifold, but we got that fixed but still happening.

its a carburetor issue, what carb does it have?

Its the stock carb, i asked and i dont htink its been cleaned. So that may be what i try next, clean it out, or even replace it. What should i get if it does need to be.

you can rebuild it/clean it if you are up for the challenge. I'm not sure what the factory carb was on a 73, probably nothing special. Your problem is definately fuel related though but it could be a couple of things in the carb eg bad float, accelerator pump, dirty jets most likely, i have had that problem on several vehicles (my 96 is the first fuel injected car i have had). Depending on what hp range you are looking for to decide what type of carb you want/need. I like edelbrock, they are basically factory tuned, but some others have more potential for power but you generally have to tune them to your motor which SUCKS. I am assuming 4 barrel, also your intake could have two different bolt patterns (spreadbore or squarebore)
