replace blinker lever

I need to replace the blinker lever on my 2002 GT, is this easy? I presume you don't need to remove the steering wheel, like in the old days. I replaced one on my 2000 Mazda, and I just took off a few screws from the steering column, a few bolts, unhitched the wiring harness and done.

Lever, like the stick.
My question is, how did you break it?
And always be careful around the airbag X_X

719mazda 09-04-2008 08:18 AM

Not broken, the bright lights don't work and I narrowed it down to the blinker lever, whatever you call it. On the left, that turns on the blinker, wipers, etc.

Just curious how hard it is to replace.

Lazerred6 09-04-2008 08:23 AM

so you can't turn your brights on that could be a fuse unless you checked that already same thing happened to me

SLP02GT 09-04-2008 08:34 AM

Its called a multifunction swith on a GM not sure what Ford calls it. But on my 00 S10 pickup the whole steering wheel and airbag and such had to be removed to replace the hazzard light swith which was a part of the multfunction switch. I just took it to the dealer cause I didn't want to screw with it....It cost a lot at the dealer like $500 for parts and labor, hopefully its easier and cheaper on the stang; I hate stealerships

you are looking to replace the entire handle/lever that controlls the turn signals, high beams and windshield wipers. right?

Lazerred6 09-04-2008 09:28 AM

i wish my interior was all black like that (off topic sorry)

yeah that part is called a multifunction switch search it on ebay

719mazda 09-04-2008 10:13 AM

SLP02GT - right! Need to remove the malfunctioning blinker lever.

BUT, I will check the fuse, did not do that. Replaced a headlight bulb and still no brights. But, when I pull back on the brights, with the lights on, it completely turns off the headlights.

Lazerred6 09-04-2008 10:16 AM

yeah your regular headlights turn off when the brights go on so somthing is just keeping that from happening. to me it seems like the lever is working and you have a wire, fuse or grounding issue

Steeda97 09-04-2008 10:30 AM

You need to change the blinker fluid.

and be sure to add another transmission for a little more gas mileage.

719mazda 09-04-2008 01:13 PM

Will add the Blinker Fluid when I get home, I use only synthetic. Great tip.:smokin:

Lazerred6 09-04-2008 01:24 PM

synthetic is a little overpriced the regular stuff will do just fine but don't get the stuff from walmart cause they test it on animals;)

amrcnidyot 09-08-2008 02:13 PM

if you do decide that it is the switch......

its not too hard to do. just to be on the safe side i would disconnect the battery and let it sit for a while so you cant set off the airbag. im pretty sure on these directions but its been a while so i might mess up a few things or leave some things out.

-remove the plastic cover over the metal plate infront of your knees (1 or 2 bolts and snap in clips)
-remove the metal plate (3 or 4 bolts)
-unscrew the 4 screws holding the steering colom cover on. (you an access them underneath
-remove the gauge bezzel (2 bolts)
-pop off the black key rest thing on the ignition
-unscrew the tilt lever (this can be a littel tough at first
-remove the steering colom plastic cover. there are 2 pieces, the botom piece probably fell off when you unscrewed it earlier.
-there are 2 bolts holding the multifunction switch on. they can be accessed on the side of the assy. do not confuse these with the 5 small screws that you can see on the front that hold the assy together.
-unplug the 2 or 3 connectors.
-remove assy
-install everything in reverse order.
