Is it safe to change tranny fluid at 87,000 miles?

Hey guys my mustang has never had the tranny fluid changed and it has been 87,000 miles. I am installing a short throw shifter and I was wondering if I could cause any damage changing the fluid? And would you guys reccomend changing it? All my shifts are pretty good but sometimes gives a llittle fight.

IT would be a good idea to change that fluid. Use whatever fluid type ford says to use as i dont know what car you have.

Change the fluid every 30K-60K miles. As for what to use, Redline D4 ATF is great stuff.

Oh yeah I have a 1998 mustang GT. So there is no way I can damage my tranny with just a simple drain and fill?

No, you're suppose to replace the fluid every 30k-60k miles. The only you would cause damage is if you underfill, overfill, or change the fluid in the most insane way.

yea i'm assuming your a manual since your installing a short shifter. It's a good idea to change your fluid. The only reason it would be bad was if you had an automatic, then it could posssibly be a problem. just make sure you use the friction modifier if you need it(not sure if the t-5 needs it or not, I know the t-45 does).

Thanks guys for all your input. Just one last thing. The friction modifier just goes in as an additive to the tranny fluid right?

Yea just add it in with the fluid. FYI if your installing the shifter yourself, you can pour the fluid in form the top when you get the shifter off. The level should be even with the bottom of the fill plug.

Hey I can only find a friction modifier for the rear differential what kind did you buy for yours and where did you get it? Sorry for all the questions but it is greatly appreciated.

It is the same for the tranny and the diff. I used Royal Purple Synchromax fluid and it already has the fric mod in it.
