Default LAST GEAR QUESTION

Found a reputable shop in San Carlos,Ca. less than a mile away from my work that does gear changes!
I've made up my mind after reading all the gear posts to put 3.73's in my
daily driver '04 GT with 5-speed.
I want better overall drivability and not have a Prius take off on me ever
again when caught off-guard!
Anyway price quoted to me if I order the gears and bearing kit from AM is
approx 900.00 installed (including what I order from AM).
They told me that the speedometer re-cal has to be done at a Ford dealer-ship for an unknown additional amount.
Am I on the the right track?
Please advise.

900 is a lot. If you are including everything it should be about 300 max. Your speedo can also be fixed by buying a handheld tuner (SCT xCal) which will give you more benefits than just a speedo re-calibration

I agree. $900 sounds is high, especially without doing the speedo re-cal install. You should be able to find someone to install the gears for around $300 and you've seen on AM what the gears/install kit cost. Good luck.

what are they charging just for labor? You can use an xcal 2 or 3 to change the setting on your ecu for the new gears.

I bought my gear stuff from AM, Motive 3.90's, speedcal, Royal Purple oil, Motive master bearing kit INCLUDING install with new axle seals all for $600. My shop charged me $240 for labor. For $900 you could get everything you need, labor and parts with a handheld tuner. Shop around a little more IMO.

sounds like you called rear-end specialties. In any case, call up TPS at 180 E Sunnyoaks Building 3, Campbell, CA, Phone: 408/370-1477, Mon-Fri: 8:00AM-6PM. Ask for Mike Mak and tell him r3dn3ck sent you. He'll do you right. They did my gears and it was a assload less than 9 bills all in.
