4.10 gear questions
 

I just bought some 4.10's, but heard from my uncle (a huge car collector) that it was a huge mistake getting those for my car. I know a ton of people have 4.10's and love them.. haven't really hard of many people that don't. He told me that it's gonna be really hard on my engine, and in the long run i'll have to end up doing a lot of repairs because of them. What do you guys think?

Honestly, no offence to yer uncle but he sure doesent seem to know much about mustangs.

Mustangs are just fine with 4:10's. I have 4:10's in my auto and ill NEVER look back. Never had any issues, and unless yer spraying or charging i have never heared of any mechanical issues with 4:10's aside from slight gear whine.

That being said, 4:10's can be a pain in the ass with 5 speeds cause you have to shift almost right away when taking off.

A lot of people reccommend 3:73 or 3:90 gearing for the manuals for that reason, however, i have NEVER heared anybody say 4:10 gearing is bad for a mustang. Nor have i eever heared of somebodys mustang being damaged due to 4:10 gears

I cant really speak for the V6's but i think they are find with 4:10's too.

Oh yeah, and yer gonna hear the same from a LOT of people on here, people with years / decades of experience with this stuff too.

Your uncle is just being old-fashion and he does not understand modular motors. Honestly, he is like a brain surgeon giveing advice to someone with plastic surgery.

To be fair, he may be a huge car collector, but he obviously is out of his comfort zone when it comes to Mustangs.

What he is trying to say, is that the car will run at higher rpms....ok, so what? He is trying to show you that this will somehow add wear and tear to the car. These motors are good for 300k miles. Do you know anyone that has ever blown a Mustang motor except for one that was jacked around with (modded). So, even if your uncle is correct, you now have a motor that might be good for only 270k miles. And, BTW, you can buy these motors when they do blow for very cheap relative to other motors.

I think your uncle really does not think you should be jacking with the car for other reasons. Perhaps there is more to the story.

4.10s here 2 years no complaints.....daily driver

if anything 4:10 is easier on your motor, it lessens the load on the motor ( lessens lagging).. under normal driving I start in 2nd gear with no hesitation, never had to deal with the 1st to 2nd gear grind when tranny is cold anymore plus you don't have to downshift as much.

Mine is a 2000 GT Standard.. you're right about him not being into mustangs.. he's a big time classic chevy collector.. one of you mentioned starting in 2nd gear from the stop.. would all of you guys with standard tranny recommend starting out in 2nd gear?

No, you let the computer do the shifting always.

I use all 5 gears. Thats why they're there.

That is just stupid....start from 1st like you are suppose to..

I have an '06 and put 4:10s in last march. No all the ls1 Camaro's (stock that is) that were kicking my ass, are now say WTF '06 Stang ain't supposed to be out running me. I will say the 24 mpg @ 80 mph days are gone. However your intown gas milage will getter better...........go figure

everyone is pretty much on the button here. 4.10's are an excellent gear for auto stangs. I prefer 3.73 for 5 speeds but 4.10's are fine if you don't mind a little extra shifting.

Been on the fence on 3.73 or 4.10 for sometime now and I think after reading this and a couple of other threads to go the 4.10 route...I don't think it will be as radical as I thought. I remember putting 3.55's in my 5.0 instead of 3.73 and regretting it. Anyway, I've seen that a lot of people recommend FRPP brand, may I ask why? Are they worth the extra $$ they cost over other brands? Any other less expensive brands that any of you "gearheads" recommend with confidence or use yourself? Thanks in advance. :t:

get the FRPP 4.10. Anything else is crap.

FRPP may be better but as long as there installed by someone who has a lot of experience and takes their time it wont matter what brand you have.

Actually, the FRPP gears are made for FRPP by Motive. So, as I did, I'd recommend saving a little cash, and get the Motive branded gears.

so how much would I be looking at on labor for new gears??

Can run from $150-500 pending on where you go. My advice is shop around for places that install gears find the best deal with someone who has done alot of gear swaps.

Ive had my 4.10's for two years now and I have had no problems or complaints. Make sure you get a tuner for the speedo recal. I went almost 8 months without it and my speedomoter was off 12 mph. Odometer didnt like it much either. Best bang for my buck mod.
