stick shift violently vibrating?
 

havent posted in a while so first of all hows everyone doin? haha

but i was driving with a friend the other day and decided to have a little spree of spirited driving as we hit about 115mph the shifter started violently shaking so i popped it in to neutral and it kept shaking until we dropped down to about 100. as i was on the parkway today i tried it out again to see if it still would do it and same deal at 115 violent shaking.

if anyone has any ideas as to what this is and what to do please let me know.

Never had at that problem at that speed. hmmmm, strange that it would only happen above 100 mph and not any time below it. In any case don't go so fast because you may do damage that requires a new trans. If anything get it checked out by a trusted mechanic.

maybe the synchronizers in ur transmission?

high speed imbalance of the drive shaft.

Yeah sounds like the u-joints might be starting to go out or the imbalance

yeah i find it to be wierd but i guess i should get it checked out what would you guys do go to ford or go to a regular mechanic? cause ford is like 100 bucks just to check things out

wouldn't that make to whole car shake? One time I bent the drive shaft on my work truck..(long story) as soon as I went over 45mph the whole truck starting shaking badly. FYI 05+ ford rangers have aluminum drive shafts and cost $700 to replace.

well if it is a MINOR imbalance then the rattling would only kick in when the imbalance is pushed to the limit.

correctomundo. It depends on the total imbalance and the location of that imbalance. A bent driveshaft is going to cause a noticeable vibration over a wide speed range.

In any case, order an aluminum driveshaft or buy someone's used stock steel unit. You can usually find an aluminum FRPP unit for under 300 bucks at most of the parts sites. It'll come with new u-joints and usually a yoke.

might as well go aluminum and upgrade. The aluminum driveshaft will hold more HP too.

oh yeah...try and keep her under such high speeds...we'd like you to KEEP posting in the forum if you know what i mean

well about keeping her under the high speeds i always do i go to the track once a week weather permitting and actually drive very slow on the streets it was just a one tiem thing at about 2 30 in the morning on the parkway with no one in site. im actually one of the smarter ones when it comes to young kids with fast cars :rolleyes:

and yeah well i think im going to get it checked out first and then see what im going to do if it is the driveshaft then ill upgrade to aluminum im not gonna get a replacment stock one but if not idk what im gonna do i originally thought it was the tranny and that is still a possibility and if so im efffed cause that could end up being a LOT of money :flamed:

go to a junkyard and try to find a aluminum driveshaft on a mustang...or just look for one on sale here and in the mean time keep it under 80 or so. I admit i have had it up above 140 but that was only once and she got a lil wobbly. But be careful and keep an eye on it. Its most likely your driveshaft.

should also replace the trans seal while your swapping driveshafts. that imbalance and shaking is also hard on the seals. and also loosens a lot of random bolts..
