I just watched a video on youtube of a guy who pours PURE acetone into his gas when he fills up and it supposedly gave him a significant increase in gas mileage and performance.
B.S. or what? |

yes...it's BS. There are effects from the acetone but even mythbusters smacked that one down. It's not going to double the mileage. To do that you have to actually squirt in less gasoline per volume of air which requires injector slope or carb changes.

Yeah, I figured it was crap, but this 17 miles to the gallon mess is gay.
Oh well. Mustangs are worth it. |

try putting a bottle of injector cleaner in your tank the next two fillups. Measure each time and record your mileage. If it improves more the second time your injectors are clogged. If they both help about the same you can try 1.5oz of acetone per 10gallons of gas (don't use more) and see if that helps.
From what I've been reading on some engineering boards is acetone helps with vaporization. If cloggy injectors are your bane, then improved atomization can only help. I wouldn't expect dramatic results but maybe a couple MPG. It may cause some smoke if your valves are hella dirty. Acetone is a strong solvent... do not let it touch painted surfaces or plastic. You're a city driver aren't you? |

Wow only 17mpg? I figured up my mileage about a month ago and on the highway I was getting around 23 mpg. The car is an 02 GT 5 speed with 35,000 miles. Like red said I'd try some injector cleaner or maybe check your air filter.

Only 23 on the highway? Man, I get 21 driving around town and go to and back from school (240 miles of highway), I average 27-28 mpg depending on traffic. Even when I drive like a bat out of hell, I've gotten 17 mpg at my worst.

well, I live in a small town, but I take all that 150hp for all its worth....
I do get pretty bad gas mileage though, Ill most likely pick up some gas treatment, and injector cleaner stuff. |
