Air Intakes

Is It Worth The Cost To Purchase A Name Brand Expensive Air Intake And Filter Such As The Fipk Or C And L Or Mac Straight Shot Over Just Using The Stock Housing With K And N Filter With Silencer Removed? I Plan On Using The Stock Mass Air Flow. I Have Been Told That The 4.6 Sohc Doesn't Benefit Form These Kits As Much As The Manufactors Would Like You To Believe. I Could See Where They May Help Out On A Cobra Or A Supercharged Engine. Has Anyone Ever Dynoed Comapred The Stock Set Up With Removed Silencer And K And N Vs One Of The Above Aftermarket Systems?

I have the FPIK, i noticed a bit more get up and go with it.
Apparently the FPIK dyno's 9-11 addional HP.
Havent done a Dyno of before and after to back it up with my own results, but the car does have a little more boost to it.

dmark101 05-27-2005 09:19 AM

removing the silencer really doesn't do much to the car's performance at all. i've heard people say that it makes the car sound more aggressive or that it adds maybe 1-2 rwhp, but i don't buy that.

there is one intake that i'm considering buying one (forgot the name of the company) that is painted to match the color of my car. :)

You can trim the silencer so that it still picks up air from the fender, just trim it at an angle so that the cross section is at least as big as the opening in your throttle body. You won't see a big increase in HP but a couple here and couple there all adds up.

In my opinion, removing the air silencer and buy a drop in K&N filter is the most cost effective way to go about it! Yeah the CAI kits look good but you might see see a little more gain with something like a FIPK or a JLT, but for the price they go for, I'd rather spend that on something else!

cobra4123 05-27-2005 12:15 PM

where do they have them for a 96 cobra

What do you mean?

dom 05-27-2005 12:42 PM

just drop in a k&n. keep or remove the silencer it wont matter.

Stevoneo 05-27-2005 02:29 PM

k & n and remove silencer. No difference really with the cai pipes. It is more for looks and I know my MAC one would make it sound like you had a turbo sucking sound but not to loud. Sounded cool

i have a JLT, ponly problem I have is that it rubs during WOT. That sucks, I am thinking off getting a new intake because mine is painted DSG and its getting annoying to keep touching it up with touch up paint. I tried adjusting it but I have run out of rubber to trim off it to make it any better.

I have this intake http://www.mustangtuningforums.com/s...ead.php?t=2258 and it sounds awesome at WOT yet quiet while driving normal and looks nice under the hood since its not metal will not get heat soaked from the engine heat.

where did you get it from?

venom 05-29-2005 09:58 AM

I got it on ebay for about $250, I think but well worth it since it includes a new airbox and looks awesome.

yeah, looks good

MineralGT 05-29-2005 02:33 PM

I got this one...It's plastic so it doesn't heat up like the metal ones. I felt a little better top end power, but the main difference is suppose to happen with the plenum and tb which you already have. Only like 160.00 on this site

So for those with the JLT would you do it again?

I like the fact how you can get it painted to match the car. Since I have a silver car, I like the Steeda too...

swervo 05-29-2005 06:23 PM

I want to go with the tuneable induction set up myself.

dom 05-29-2005 07:08 PM

my cold air intake is a western motorsports powerpipe :) the air filter element goes deep down into the fenderwell

When I had the C&L, it did the same thing.

Its cool that it matches but the rubbing is annoying. I would say no. I am thinking of just selling it and getting a different intake down the road.

I am glad that I asked because I was thinking about ordering one pretty soon, maybe I will do something else instead.

I am a little torn because I have read a bunch about people saying that RAI/CAI is not worth it. I know the vendors all have their numbers, but who knows really..

The intake is good, its just the size of it makes it hard to get it to fit properly. I am going to fool with it later tonight when I get home and see if I can get more clearance.
